Sometimes, it's just easier to just replace it all and start over.  Not necessarily cheaper, but easier.  I've had issues where I spent weeks trying to determine if a problem was with the motherboard, CPU and/or RAM or some combination therof.  In the end, it was the motherboard.  In retrospect, I would have preferred to replace the whole thing to save time.  (I just couldn't spend the money to do so...)

I did test the RAM using both win7's memory test and using memtest.  it passed all tests and that was enough for me.  the cpu and motherboard are pretty symbiotic.  I'm not going to buy a CPU to put on the same motherboard unless I'm certain the problem was with the CPU only and that the MB didn't take out the CPU (like if I burned up the CPU because the fan stopped working and I didn't pay attention to the heat).  there's no value added, IMO, to troubleshoot further than that unless you have some ways to test the MB or CPU that I'm not aware of.
