pbognar subtlearts pbognar Set whole note duration = CTRL+SHIFT+1 Set half note duration = CTRL+SHIFT+2 Set quarter note duration = CTRL+SHIFT+4 Set eight note duration = CTRL+SHIFT+8 Set sixteenth note duration = CTRL+SHIFT+6 Set thirty-second note duration = CTRL+SHIFT+3 They are all available for custom keybindings - you could use the shift-numbers, they're all unassigned... BUT unfortunately, none of them work - they seem to be called in the same way as from the HUD, which means that we're still stuck with the Control Bar until a fix (Quick or otherwise) appears... Wow - you've got to be kidding. I just found those shortcuts in the manual - I don't have X1, so couldn't really try them. ... I wonder if key bindings could be setup to perform what the Control Bar is able to accomplish... I think we should have a group code walk-through. Nope. that's what I tried - the only keybindings available seem to do what the HUD does - they appear to change the value, and in fact it even visibly changes in the Control Bar module, but it doesn't actually change the value of notes entered manually. Unless someone else comes up with a different/better workaround, for the moment the only way to change those values is by using the Control Bar module (hey, at least that works!). As mentioned above, you can take a lot of the major mouse travel out of this by parking the CB at the bottom, or even floating it wherever you want it. It takes up quite a bit of room, but you can always disable a few modules and it does shrink to fit. Sadly, again, it only has one state and can't load or revert, so you have to manually reconfigure it every time you want to use it in a different way. It really needs to be either a) incorporated into screensets, or b) given its own preset system. Maybe as part of an overall update giving it some configurability back - say, a module with a selectable array of buttons, which would give some customization options back to those who want that...

Sidroe My problem is I pull up the staff view,I choose say a quarter note to write on the staff. The tool only writes 16th note durations even though it put a quarter note on the staff. I click the drop down list to choose a note to write on the staff. Anything I choose for the note, it still only writes a 16th note duration. I tried choosing from the smart tool bar at the upper left of the gui, choosing from the dropdown list on the tool itself, it still is writing 16th note durations. HELP! This will be a problem for me too. I am thinking of getting X1 soon and I use the staff view to write my music all the time. Maybe I'll just stick with 8.5 till this is fixed.

subtlearts pretty sure that was an April 1 special... That's too bad. I got my hopes up there for a while. Seems like a strange thing to make a joke out of IMO.

I didn't have the impression it was a Cakewalk employee or anyone at CW at all. I saw a post by a user and it seemed like it was an april fools prank based on the fact that many of us have been hoping for such a thing (or any kind of sigfnificant improvements to staff view) for a long time. I don't think CW was involved in any way. This is all just based on my impressions of what I saw, which I assumed was the same thing you were talking about. It's possible that something else has happened which I don't know about, but I would think we'd have heard more about it if that were true. Sorry if I've contributed to any misunderstanding...

Sorry, guys, but I am a bit lost. Where on the Control Bar are the note durations? I live and die by the Staff view so am I right there with you on the frustration. I looked last night and did not see note duractions on the Control Bar, but maybe it is my poor visions--or else I don't know what I am looking for.

As subtlearts says, it's in the Tools Module which is usually the first module on the Control Bar (the one which says 'SONAR X1' in it). What you are after is the dropdown called 'Event Draw Duration'.

I have similar concerns to the OP, I never use PRV either and find X1 much slower for entering notes in Staff View with the mouse. I also reported a bug in the Step Record in Staff View which has been acknowledged but not yet fixed as far as I know. X1 definitely slowed down note entry in Staff View with the mouse. In 8.5.3 it was possible to have one hand entering notes with the mouse and the other on the computer kbd changing note duration on the number pad and toggling between 'draw'/ 'erase' / 'select' using D, E or S on the QWERTY pad. These shortcuts are either no longer available or can't be done with one key, and mouse entry is therefore much slower. The Step Record function in Staff View, however, seems unchanged so it is possible to choose the note on a MIDI keyboard (rather than enter with a mouse), and here the number pad does still work to change the duration. Forward step and backstep work as usual in Step Record so there is no (or less) need for the Erase tool. This is quite a quick way of working if you can use a MIDI kbd rather than the mouse. BUT, be aware that in X1 there is a bug in Step Record - if you try entering more than three 8th or 16th notes in a row the duration goes out of kilter on the fourth one and has to be reset. Other note values seemed unaffected. I reported this bug a while back and it was acknowledged by CW, but wasn't one of the bugs listed as fixed in 1B. I assume it will be addressed in X2 (?).

It's great to know that Cakewalk knows about the problem and I hope it can be fixed soon. While you guys are at it maybe you could make a few more shortcuts for some other note durations for triplets and doted notes. Ever since I found I can program my shuttle-wheel on the Contour shuttle pro to dial in shortcuts for the notes I've been anxious for that function to actually work. Thanks Cakewalk guys for listening.

It's in the Tools Module which is usually the first module on the Control Bar (the one which says 'SONAR X1' on it, and has the 'Smart', 'Select', 'Move' 'Edit', 'Draw' and 'Erase' buttons in it). What you are after is the dropdown called 'Event Draw Duration'. It's the only other control in that module. If you hover the mouse over it , the tooltip says 'Event Draw Duration'.

konradh "on the Tools module, a little dropdown menu button on the bottom right called, I think, Note Duration." Thanks. What does the Tools module look like? It looks a lot like the Tools HUD which you summon by pressing 'T', but it lives on the Control Bar. If you don't see it, right click in a blank-looking area of the Control Bar and make sure the 'Tools' line is checked and not off-screen. At the risk of sounding snarky, there is also a manual and a help-file which contain information about this stuff.
