I have not been using hardware compressors while tracking. I need to experiment more with that.
If you're working in 24 bit for recording you
shouldn't need to use compression because your noise floor is so low and dynamic range so wide. If you're finding that you're not, then perhaps some better techniques for recording may be in order. Better quality mic perhaps, use techniques like putting the singer in a corner (facing out toward center of the room) with a duvet behind them is just one technique to capture a cleaner vocal recording.
