Sonar 8 and Windows 7 64 bit

Hi Folks...

I am just wondering if there will be any issues with running Sonar 8 poducer edition on Win 7 64 bit? One of my concerns is, will the virtual instruments and effects included with Sonar 8 run without any problems? Hope someone can advide. Thanks.

    Sonar 8 or 8.5 ?

There should not be any issues as you can run both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Sonar on the 64 bit Windows

The bitbridge was much improved in version 8.5 so the 64 bit versions compatability with 32 bit plug ins is much improved. If you have issues you can try JBridge.

If you run the 64 bit version of Sonar you may loose some of the ancient DXI plugins, such as Dreamstation and some of the older effects. DXi's cannot easily be bridged.

Make sure you get the latest updated for third party plug ins, many will have released 64 bit updates that are not on the installation disks (very important for Toontrack products)

Also be very careful if you have saved older projects as bundles. Sonar 8 might not be able to open them properly in Windows 7 64 bit or 32. There were some issues caused by changes Microsoft did with 7. Cakewalk addressed these issues with version 8.5, but anything before that is a crap shoot.

Just to make it clear - Sonar 8 does not work on 64 bit. You need 8.5.

It will work, but there are issues. I had it running with the Win 7 Beta back in '09, but I couldn't get older projects to load properly because of the bundle issue. If you search Cake's website there' an explanation on why 8.5 is the better choice for Win 7

    From Cakewalk:
We have run into only a couple of compatibility issues in Win7 during the course of our development/testing of SONAR 8.5.
    - The MMIO API in Win7 (typically used for writing RIFF wave files) has a compatibility issue with the mmioDescend API with LIST ‘WAVE’ chunks. This caused our code that reads audio bundle files to fail and read scrambled audio data. We worked around this problem in 8.5
