Pick up a used Crate Powerblock (it has class D power and gets a very Marshall vintage like sound) and get a 1x12 cab with a Emi "Texas Heat" speaker to play it through. It will get you there cheap, sounds good, and takes pedals well. Then when you find something better you can throw it in a bag and take it along as a back-up amp. I like Fargen amps for what you are talking about. With mics and sound men you really don't want too much stage volume. If you get a Marshall stack you'll never be able to turn it up into the sweet spot in a club... perhaps at an utdoor gig but even then the soundman may shut you down. Dr. Z amps are great for the working guitarist too. Don't get something too big, those days are gone... unless you are playing stadiums or huge arenas. Even then, you will damage your hearing trying to get "the tone", not to mention what you will do to the people in the first few rows or who are standing close to the stage. Neil Young has always used a Fender Tweed Deluxe, 22w 1x12 miced with a homemade "whizzer" that adjusts the knobs. You will do much better overall in the 20-30 watt range. Also take a look at Valvetech amps. They are good and they can get loud but they sound good turned down too. You may want to ask this question on the amps forum at thegearpage.com Julien Julien Julien

My Boogie and the Vox The Boogie is the Studio 22. Sweet amp...plenty loud for small gigs with it's 12" stock speaker. Line out lets me use bigger clean amps with more speakers if I really want it. (Oh my!) I gigged with his amp for many many years, and it never let me down. I gave $500 for it brand new and I have seen them on Ebay for $350 used.... I think the new ones are much closer to 4 figures now..... The Vox is a 30w hybrid.... one tube, SS circuitry, and modeling of a number of amps..... 10" stock speaker , model AD 30 VT. Much lighter than the Boogie. Bought this one for $250 to play and leave at the church, quit playing in the church so it now resides here in the studio. For it's price and size, it is a nice amp. Sounds pretty good too.

I got a Bugera V22 for <$300 new. Sort of a cross 'tween a Fender/Vox/Marshall. Sold my Vox after getting it. I still use software for recording cause its much faster and tweakable, but the V22 is my jammin' rig and its friggin loud! 22 watts, all tube.

I've never had a Mesa but I have been wanting a Mark. Either a Mark III or V. I was talking to Greg Lisher (VCB and MOD) about amps and asked him about the amps on the Monks of Doom albums. He said the guitars were all through Mesa Mark IIIs.. Marks get a great clean tone. He was also using a Chandler Tele, IIRC, on most of it... if it matters.

that'd make a perfect gigging rig... get the head, it's small and light. get a lightweight but well built 2x12 cab, either closed or open back, depending on the sound you want, i'd highly recommend a Avatar 2x12. you can order those with a partial open back that has a panel to close it up, perfect compromise setup. that way, it's easy to carry the rig. you can always add other cabinets later, or borrow cabs to do big gigs, etc.... avatar vintage 2x12 cab. 1/3 of my current rig: this is the mark2b, 60 watts, a yamaha DG stomp in the fx loop, an Avatar Vintage closed back cab, with a Celestion Heritage G12H-55hz speaker, and a basic pedalboard. my live rig: well, it's been many years, that i've boiled it all down to the essence of what i need to pull off everything i want to do. it's a very stripped down version of a much larger rig. i have (2) other 1x12 cabs as well, for live work.. (2) Roland 1x12 closed back cabs, both with english celestion greenbacks. i can also run these as a wet/dry rig, using a hafler power amp to send a stereo signal from my yamaha DG stomp to the left/right speakers, with the center speaker dry and unaffected. i can mic the nice one (the avatar) with it aimed backwards, or use the palmer direct. i can also use the other two for monitors, for the band, and for myself. i put one to the side, behind the drums, or across the stage from the side, for the band to que off of... and the other, goes on the floor in front of me, angled up like a vocal monitor, .. with the palmer, i don't need any mics... the sound man loves it. all the cabs are away from the audience, so it can actually be mixed... but i've got sound pressure on the stage for myself and band, so it sounds solid on stage, without being overwhelmingly loud. then i use a volume pedal with about 10db extra headroom for mixing my solos and rhythms in and out. soundman doesn't touch a thing once the loud peaks are set, and the rhythm volume is dialed in the FOH with the cabs all pointed backwards

This was my first tube amp The Crate VFX 5212 with broun' sound drivers. American made. All tubes. A class act played by the likes of ZZtop. My main reason for parting was mainly that in order to drive it into distortion you had to turn it up to where noone wants to be around you at home. I played it at church and had it turned to 2 and they were complaining it was too loud and this was in a 500 seat auditorium. I would highly recommend this amp if you can find one and you choke it in small venues. Lots of players swear these are on par with a mesa in sound. It was a great experience for a new player on guitar, wish I hadn't sold it now :-(

I know this is an amp thread, but I saw one or two Avatar cab pics above and just wanted to say that I highly recommend Avatar for cabs and speakers. I've talked with the owner, Dave, many times (and used to have 10 of his cabs - down to two now) and their customer service is very, very good!

I just picked up a MarshallMA Series MA100C 100W 2x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp from MF. It was a 'mint' condition used amp. I paid $782.13, no tax and shipping included. When I got it, the wiring to the reverb had broken and wasn't working. I contacted Marshall and they opened a new waranttee on the amp so that I could have it repaired at a local shop. Very cool of them. Anyway, I absolutely love this amp. Great tone, including the old school Marshall gain, and great clear clean tones on the clean channel. I was a little worried at first, this being a Marshall, Vietnamese made amp, but I've been very happy with the quality. I will eventually change out the tubes and speakers (and maybe even the ON/Off/ Standby switches (their a little chessy)), but overall, well worth it for a combo tube amp that I can easiley take in and out of the clubs and rehearsal and still have that great Marshall tone and power behind me.
