You might benefit from installing another physical drive in your laptop. Sonar works best when there's one disc dealing the the operating System and another dedicated to Audio duties. The best scenario is 3 drives especially if you plan on using any of the massive sample streaming libraries out there, but this is not easy with a laptop.

I think the consensus is with Bristol. At least two separate physical drive are best. And not one drive divided into different partitions. I also waited until the beginning of this year before I went to 64bit completely. I had Vista 64 with Sonar 32 on another machine for well over two years. All the while running XP32 on my music machine. It wasn't till X1 came around before I really decided to go ahead and make the move. And that was due to advise I got from a friend that said to do what some on here are saying. Install both versions of X1; 32 & 64 bit. You can switch effortlessly between the two with no side effects!! And I can tell you, I hardly use the 32bit version of X1.

Frank Haas Then 64 it is! I'm basically doing "embellished" hard-rock... So it's just DI guitars into free VST's, and Superior Drummer with my own sample library, and some synths (whatever I have laying around.) This is by no means recreating the Philharmonic, but I would like to get my latency down, and plugins up. I run quite a few now, but I sacrifice latency, and for some reason, I never freeze stuff... lazy I guess.
my conclusion would then still or because of that 32bit.. and if you read between the lines you'll see that everyone is hassling with some workarounds (f.e. JBridge) one day you will turn around and say why am I still in 32 bit when everything I want to use is 64?
yeah, maybe it would be a good idea to switch to 64bit when that day arrives and not sooner. But then, as Steve pointed out, you can run both applications (or all 4) at the same time and choose whatever fits best.. I am running a lot of UAD plugins (32bit) and some other stuff, and its a pita to run these plugins through Bitbridge.. maybe you can verify that for yourself and report back,.. frank This summer all UAD going to be update x64..

Thanks again. Scott Garrigus gave me some help, too, and all is installed RE the Sonar X1d Expanded and now I am going to do some partitioning and load up my library and content, and more plug-ins.

Jonesey Now that I did get the Sonar X1d Expanded 64 bit installed, I am going to sort out the partitioning on my internal D and E and my external drive. I am going to use that one for project backup and the library. I am assuming I will be able to use it with my laptop and my new desktop when I build it. This next part feels weird since I am going from XP to Windows7 64 bit and I suppose a P4 with 1gb DDR to this i7 with 16gb DDR3! .....I might be back.....soon! Thanks again Michael

My laptop has 2X500gb drives with the 2nd being partitioned as D and E 232gb each. What I wonder is if there is any advantage to putting audio on the D and content-sample library stuff on the E, since they are both really the same unit. I am thinking that using my 1Tb external drive partitioned in "halves" (more or less though I am pondering whether to make them unequal) and keeping the library on it and the second part to backup my audio-projects. I am assuming I will be able to use this external drive with the tower I'll be building "soon". ( just bought a house and am trying not to add stuff to do to "the list" !) Any comments on this plan are very welcome! 1. Laptop with C programs and D audio (E for my other files and data) 2. External drive with F for library-content and G for backup of D

Psound, there is no advantage to having the same drive partitioned to hold your audio AND your samples. What ends up happening is you hard drive is fighting with itself to access both the audio AND the samples at the same time! With only one head on a drive, it has to stop doing one thing (audio/samples) to access the other data it needs(audio/samples). Are you seeing what we are trying to tell you? Also hard drives loose speed once they get more than half full. Now if you have your audio on one partition and"other files" (that aren't the samples you will be using) on the other partition that might work.

stevenpanter Sidroe I believe JBridge allows you to do both. You're absolutely right about this Sidroe. The only thing you cannot currently do is to run Rewire plugins in 64-bit. However, there is a thread on one of the other Cakewalk forums which says that 64-bit Rewire libraries have recently been released to developers for beta testing, so this could become possible any time in the future. Actually, you can already if you use Rewire VST: http://www.energy-xt.com/index.php?id=0115. It's basically a jBridge for Rewire.

Thanks Grem yes I get that. I have 3 IDE drives on my P4 and am thinking 3 +external (library) for the next desktop I build. Since my external backup drive is only to duplicate the D audio, that external drive will only be active when streaming partition E library samples. I understand the drive head thing. I am not familiar with laptops nor Windows7, and I am playing catch up with everything -PCs, Sonar X1 vs 5.2, etc, that has happened over the past 6 years! Sheesh!
