Hi Danny...

Being "stuck" with ASIO scares me... I've never been happy running under it... Back in the Sonar6 and previous days I used an older machine (well, it wasn't old then ;-)) which I still have and run two SSL/Soundscape Mixtreme 192's to give me 32 i/o.... I don't remember running the ASIO driver for them, but I'm sure I did at least try it...

For me, the  ASIO is simply too difficult to work with/manage... I often need to adjust my latency while working on a piece to deal with CPU overhead vs. latency needs and doing so with ASIO is a PITA! (BTW, why is it that the ASIO panel button in Sonar never works for me when I try ASIO.... I guess it's the way my driver is written?

They both seem to work the same (mostly) but issues such as mine above keep me away from it.... along with the lack of support for multiple devices as I often use a Presonus Studiolive along with my Mixtreme.... Of course, Presonus gear only gives full support under ASIO now and WDM has become very limited... Almost useless, so combining them has become a problem above and beyond! (Originally their driver supported full wdm as well)

Keni

Hi Keni,

The ASIO thing scared me at first too, but I'll tell you what I have noticed since switching over to it. VSTi's behave way better for me using ASIO which is a plus and I could never get lower than 2.8ms using WDM when I needed to. Now if I need to, I can get down to 1.3ms I think it is without any issues or drop outs. Not that it's that big a deal for me, but it has been helpful in certain situations. I just miss having all my output driver busses ready to go in Sonar to where I would just select the output in my master bus and send it to anything I wanted on the fly.

As far as your ASIO panel button, that's strange. It works for me using both of my cards and it even works on my net pc which runs ASIO4ALL drivers. When I click the panel button in Sonar's preferences, it brings up my ASIO4ALL driver control panel. Yeah it could be how your drivers are written, but I can't say because I honestly don't know anything about that stuff. I just hope you can get your issue resolved. Best of luck to you. :)

Hi Danny...

I've heard that from many people but haven't experienced that here... I can get down to 1.8ms with wdm but only 4.5ms with ASIO tho I never really work there... I guess my pc itself is too slow... I tend to work at near the 4ms mark in the beginning of a project but by the time I'm mixxing I need to open that up to near 8.5ms by mix... <sigh>... One day I'll be rich enuf to get back into the swing of leading edge.... I was once near it! ;-)

As to the vst's? I have no problems running any that I've found under either WDM/KS or ASIO... They all seem to run the same here. Maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks for your concern... I'm sure The Bakers will straighten it out... Right now I don't see anything in particular in 255 that will matter to my work so I don't mind waiting... a little... ;-)

The strange thing is I see the exact same issue with even 8.5 with my MOTU 828 at home. i.e. if I also have an onboard audio device selected in WDM mode at 44.1 I get a playback error. I'm not sure this is really new although you guys say it worked in an earlier build. I'll investigate further.

Hi Noel...

I've not had (or do I have) any problems with my driver in any version of Sonar until X1b build 255... I must say I was very surprised due to this... Last thing I might have expected...

BTW Noel..

I don't have an onboard device selected... I have my onboard chipset disabled and have done so forever as it always caused me grief in the past... I have no need of it...

X2.... now that is truly frightening. I am sure I will shell out the clams and buy it, They have to make money to keep people on staff... I'll do my part and assume that they are doing their best with everything, and really... I think they are great and Sonar really is a great product. Considering all it does it is amazing that it works as well as it does, having to work with all kinds of hardware and other software.. all things considered, I am happy. I wish I had the option of 8.5.3... I got a copy of LE 8.5.1 on a disc with the Octa and a free DL of X1 Studio in the promotion... I have S7 PE but really, since I never really learned S7 I think I should stay with X1 to stave off confusion... heck I confuse myself anyway, or maybe it's the meds... what used to be drugs are now meds.... it is amazing how things change with age, huh? OF course I never used drugs... I abused them, laff. What Once Were Vices are Now Habits... Doobie Brothers  OR
David Crosby: "If I Could Only Remember My Name" ...and get a new liver (really, I wasn't that bad).

Hi Julien...

You're probably right to stick with X1 tho I have my sincere doubts as to whether I'm gonna upgrade... A first as I've been with Cakewalk and totally dedicated since the first Cakewalk For Windows... But X1 has a lot of catching up to do to be as intact as 8.5.3 is with it's new interface and all the side effects that caused... I cannot use it for my paying clients as it just doesn't cut it yet. too many things are still in need of recovery and while I have a lot of faith in Cakewalk, it's now Cakewalk by Roland... and I'm getting some bad feelings with this last release.... Not the fault of the programmers (directly) but affecting my work too harshly... 6 months since the release and tho I've learned it's changed ways (for the most part) I can't come close to my work efficiency in previous versions... So I will most likely be forced to remain skeptical and wait the extra 6 months (or more) until they release a demo that I will very thoroughly examine prior to upgrading... I'm very sad that I have to think this way, but I am noit happy with my X1 experiences and have found nothing new in it that helps me other than a tweak or two that was expected (desired) in 8.5.3... I can't pinpoint one of the little things, but I must admit I have run across one or two...

The current envelope situation is a horror for me... while it's a nice idea to make it certain/dedicated editing (Edit Filter) it need a lot of overhaul to be as good as before with this new paradigm... I don't like it and I'm finding it extremely frustrating... The new grouping of controls for TV along with sizes of the buttons and distance between is another problem. Not everyone has or can afford a new widescreen monitor... I spend far too much time re-sizing things than ever before while working....

My list could go on for a long time but this isn't the place and I'm sure I've already stepped on a few toes. I was hoping I'd see some sign of these things in need during the updates, but so far it's been essentially only fixes for things out right broken... No changes to bridge the gap created in this release... So I wonder how long is it gonna take... and while I agree that I want to upgrade continually and keep the company alive and improving, I don't feel any improvement this time and my skepticism has me on hold... I like the new ProChannel, but I stay away from using it in case I must go back to 8.5.3...

I know I can make music with any software... It's only a tool, but some tools "fit my hand" better than others and X1 just doesn't fit right.... I'm hoping it's tailored better soon!
