Just a little addenda , the MORE measurements you make , the better. Dont even stop at the minimum recommendation go on and on ... make a little chart on your floor in front of your listening area , and work a plan out for the mic placement ..., also remember to include YOUR body sitting in the chair for each measurement , your mass, whether small or large WILL affect the measurements ...

there is a guy whose avatar is holding a cat on another forum who blasts ARC as snake oil ,,, but he sells sound altering panels ... so he has a vested interest in HIS product.. but if you wander over to a forum whose name has something to do with where a baby resides before it is born, well they kind of question his motives.. just saying ...

Really? that's hilarious. What the hell does he think he's been doing all this time with his own ears and EQ plugs? Maybe he just looks at a spectral analyzer and EQ's with his eyes... whatever get's you through the night, I guess.

Ethan Winer is actually an accomplished musician and audio engineer, and has been extraordinarily generous over the years freely sharing his extensive knowledge of acoustics. Go to the realtraps website and start reading. There is no better free source of information on the subject. How many other manufacturers offer detailed directions for building their own products yourself? Yes, he has been up front with his disdain for ARC, and in the process has alienated many satisfied ARC users. Where he stumbles is in refusing to acknowledge any benefit to room equalization, when in fact there is some. Despite his intransigence, however, Ethan's core message is accurate: the majority of acoustical problems are not addressed by ARC, and in fact may be exacerbated by it.

:-) I'm starting to think that it's a lot easier to teach someone how to mix than to explain what's wrong with Advanced Room Correction. :-)

It was probably his tact that alienated people more so than his condemnation of the program. I'm sure a lot of those he pissed off were already well aware that a perfectly tuned flat recording studio would be the preferable scenario, as opposed to trying to compensate for the lack of one. There's little tolerance in today's society for a preachy purist.

He's a great guy and I have learned TONS from his videos. :D So anybody try the new 64 bit ARC update yet?

[derail] same for Toontrack! it bugs me to death that we get no update information from toontrack on the products I have registered with them except through users on the cakewalk forum! [/derail]

There's little tolerance in today's society for a preachy purist. In this field especially, there is little tolerance. Period. In one particularly nasty attack on Gearslutz, a poster had the audacity to not only question Ethan's veracity but Dan Lavry's as well, saying they are both unqualified to explain how things work because they do not record for a living. That's like a prostitute claiming to have more expertise on STDs than her doctor. I, for one, subscribe to the philosophy that knowing how stuff works is essential to the creative process. Without technical knowledge, we are "monkeys with ears mindlessly turning knobs and trying to guess our way to desired results" (to quote another GS poster in the same thread).

I'm all for a spirited debate, but more often than not it seems to devolve into an ego fest. I've trimmed down a lot of my forum memberships for just this very reason. Most members behave themselves, argue their points passionately, but ultimately conduct themselves with respect and restraint... but there's always a few, ain't there?
