Although, I might be tempted by this:

Damn...  I forgot how sexy the Timex Sinclair was for its time...  Much better then the Pet or Heathkit from the same era (but neither has wonderful as the Comodore 64 that came out later!  LOL!).

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Evolution goes on, but the touch screen "GUI" would probably be better for my Media Center than my DAW.

The only thing I can think of in a DAW/Windows situation with touch screen, is to have a dedicated touch screen with customizable controls.
So you can "make your own" daw controller - would be perfect to have tilted on your desktop.

Of course, as already mentioned, this would make the burritos and potato chips be banned from the studio. And then all which is left is the beer...

Stop blaming Bill Gates.  He's retired from Microsoft.

Hahaha, he is retired but he is still blaming everywhere, not just in Microsoft

I have this already, it's called an iPad 2 running TouchAble, Konkreet Performer, Griid, etc. Too bad it only works with Ableton Live.

This new UI actually looks like its based off of Windows Phone 7, which was based off of Zune. It doesn't look like they ripped off Apple at all, IMHO, but rather looked to their other products.

Interesting thread, but gotta move it to Software.

Carry on.

I was gonna point that out. They're turning your pc into "windows phone 7" tablets. Cool bells and whistles for everyday consumers but not so much for us. I always wanted them to come out with a power user version of windows. Lite on gimmicks, heavy on performance and stability.

LOL My thought exactly. Apple sells hardware, so they came up w/ an OS for it. Makes sense. Some of that stuff gets integrated into their other OS as well. Also make sense.

This (Windows 8) doesn't.

Yeah a power version of Windows would be pretty sweet and the home edition for everyone else.
Windows 8 looks like a joke

Operating systems are converging so that they work on a variety of devices. We are starting to see the inevitable flattening of computing devices and thus their UIs. It actually makes sense to provide a consistent experience from phone to tablet to desktop PC to whatever the hell comes next.

As long as Win8 is lean and mean, and evidence suggests it will be, then I have no real problem with the UI and a lot of it looks pretty slick. It also looks easy to hop around, switch apps, etc. Will a lot of it benefit a DAW?...well probably not as DAWs rarely benefit substantially from OS "features" but more-so from pure performance and getting out of the way. Win7 was sure a benefit though and I think unarguably so. But Win8 sure looks like it has benefits for your "do-it-all" machines (banking, office, social, entertainment, etc).

As long as they continue to work on lean stability and security while making it boot up and shut down quickly I'll be happy. Win7 was a huge step in the right direction. People have been wary of every OS MS has released at least since Windows 95 (and maybe even earlier) and I don't see this being any different. Sometimes there's reason to be wary, but IMO it's almost always an eventual improvement.

I remember when Vista was in the early stages of developement and I read an article that stated MS was committed to pushing the envelope of digital audio. With all their subsequent and seemingly targeted versions, I thought this might possibly lead to an OS version aimed at those of us who use our PC's for music production. Always thought that would be a niche worth their time to exploit.

The exact opposite approach seem to work for Apple. They were established among the audio/graphic people before they helped initiate/started capitalizing on the current trends. I certainly hope that MS can keep a strong focus on the audio community's needs, though, of course, campaigns like this put the accent on the all-in-one, à la Apple approach. I skipped Vista and 7, so I'm likely to move directly to 8, if ever.

I run Logic on a MacBook Pro for my portable rig and I can only praise the tight integration between the OS and the DAW software.

Howdy, Rain. I'm in financial hibernation so it's likely I'll not see 7 as well. I would though like to see a stripped down M$ OS tailored explicitly for digital audio. Not likely to happen but it's still a solid idea IMO.

The system requirements for Win8 are the same as for Win7. First time in history that ever happened so they are doing something right.
Dont worry, you can still set up the start screen just like how it is in Win7 and it's supports Instant On boot ups also.
