Beagle [side note] have you ever seen an armadillo run? (I know, most people have never even seen them ALIVE). those suckers are FAST! Yep - when we were living out in the country near Chicota TX (NW of Paris), our dog had a regular duel with a resident armadillo. She was one fast dog, most squirrels didn't stand a chance if she decided they needed killing... but that armadillo always managed to stay about 2 inches in front of her, no matter how fast she went. Amazing. They don't look like they should be able to go that fast.

I know - I was SHOCKED when I first saw one running through the Boy Scout camp, pre-teen adolescent boys in tow... the boys had no chance, that armadillo left them in the dust!
