If you are making money from your recordings, then get the best Audio I/O possible.  However, if you are a hobbyist, then look at the budgeted amount and stick with it.

Especially if you have a wife

I recently upgraded my interface to the RME UFX and would recommend it.  Tons of I/O, USB and Firewire connectivity, very good drivers, Mic Pres and converters.

It's not the most inexpensive interface on the market, but is a step up from many of the prosumer interfaces in my opinion.

+1.  If I was shopping right now I would seriously look at this.  But my Fireface 400 hasn't outlived its usefulness yet.  RME is great kit...solid, reliable, powerful.
