Just read up on the Sysx View, then. You can save each dump with the name of the song, then select which you want and send it back to the Yamaha. If this is really all you want to do, you don't need SONAR, though -- it's really overkill. You could use something like MIDI-OX, or I'm sure there are free SysEx librarians out there. -Susan

page 229 reads: Create a new play list Choose File > New, choose Play List Set from the list, and click OK sadly in sonar X1 studio there is NO play list set on the list and page 1067 says to selct view then sysx - there is no view menu as far as i can see. please keep trying - cakewalk tech support did not help. thanks

But Sysx View is in the Studio version, and that's what you want to be looking for, not the Play List. Sysx View lets you receive, store, and send banks of sysex settings to your hardware. I suppose you could create a Play List of projects that only include auto-send sysex banks, but if Studio doesn't have Play Lists, that's moot anyway! -Susan

anon125 AHA! thanks now what do i do! Follow the PDF instructions under "To dump a Sysx bank into SONAR". They're straightforward, so if you get stuck post back & tell us where you ran into a problem. -Susan

If you don't see a DRM (Dump Request Macro) for your keyboard listed, you'll need to use "<You start dump...>" and do it manually. It's the first in the list, I think. "<You start dump...>" puts SONAR in a waiting mode, then you do whatever you need to do to start transmitting messages from your Yamaha. -Susan

On pg. 64 it says see pg. 59 . Pg. 59-60 tells you how to use the Function Settings to send the "Initial Setup", which is what we're talking about (it's more often called "bulk dump"). Did you try that? -Susan

jbow In a nutshell.. what is sysx view? Thanks, J It's been a standard Cakewalk/SONAR view ever since I can remember for receiving, storing, and sending System Exclusive banks for hardware devices. If you have an external synth set up with multiple voices (bank/patch combinations), fx, outputs, whatever, you can send all of that info to SONAR via a bulk dump, save it in the project or to a file, then send it back to the synth whenever you like. You can also tell it to auto-send the bank(s) when you open the project. You can specify a port for each bank, and IIRC you can have up to 256 banks stored with each project file, so it can handle a mess of devices. As to why they called it "Sysx" instead of "Sysex", or "SysEx", I couldn't say. Maybe it was commonly abbreviated that way at one point... -Susan

Thanks Susan for your patience. following what you suggested yamaha did appear to 'send' initsend. saw nothing at the sonar end- still 0 bytes received. i even tried reversing the midi in and out.

anon, just a basic thought, did you see the Sysx received popup box after you hit init send? On my system (dual monitors) I thought nothing had happened either until I minimized X1 & found it hiding behind the main gui. The sysx view page won't update until you hit done. Best, HeyDan

the doohicky that i use to conect the yamaha to the computer - its midi in light flashes when i send. Do you see that "doohicky" listed under Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Devices in SONAR? That's your MIDI interface, and it needs to be checked as both an Input and Output device. Also make sure the System Exclusive check box is selected under Edit> Preferences> MIDI - Playback and Recording. If it isn't listed, make sure you've installed the drivers for the interface properly. Please identify which interface you're using if you need more help with it. -Susan
