Sounds like you have good cards for both machines.

Cake I guess doesn't want to sound like they are copying Mac.... Cake has been around for a very long time doing midi sequencing software when most musicians had never heard of midi.

I recommend a full version of MC5 to everyone getting started in this home recording thing. It's inexpensive, easy to learn, and is very powerful.

both the lexicon alpha and the m-audio 2496 are good soundcard with good drivers.  both are listed on my website as recommendations.

I saw the 2496, but I guess I missed seeing the Alpha on your list.
KUDOS on the your superb and very helpful list!

I see your point, but to Cakewalk's credit, I have seen MC5 sold
at BestBuy, Target, and Walmart, so I'm sure the word is getting out
at how excellent and inexpensive MC is.

Also, I agree totally, and will further say that MC5 + Lexicon Alpha
for a WinXP laptop will give the best and most user friendly DAW available, for under $100.

Yes, but in this particular thread, I started with the factory DVD install of
full MC5.   I then did a COMPLETE Deinstall of MC5, and then a 2nd
full MC5 install, which is where I am now.

Thanks!  the alpha is on page 2 of the spreadsheet.  you have to go to the 2nd page by clicking on the page controls inside the docuemnent window.  I need to try to find a better way to do that.  it's a little confusing (and doesn't fit right in all browsers).
