Carry the box to a Staples or Office Depot store. I believe the mark up they add is smaller then the "mailbox" stores.

I ship out of there quite often and the shipping is reasonable. They probably look at the UPS shipping as a "loss leader" to get customers in the store, where you will probably buy something else before leaving.

I have sold a few guitars on ebay as well. I did a little research on shipping and if they are willing to pay the price I shipped it. I'm not a natural salesman nor do I like to bicker and barter over stuff. When I use ebay, almost without fail I get someone sending me an email trying to break the rules somehow.  I have had a few non-paying bidders and you go through a lot of red tape in order to stop the listing fees.

I always got nervous when shippuing a guitar and made extra sure it was wrapped well. This usually added a lot to the shipping price.

In short... I try to avoid ebay now and have found myself giving away some of my older stuff to someone who could use it or else I keep it. I so hate ebay now that I would rather take a hit on a trade at guitar center than go through all the hassle.

I still list smaller items but avoid things like guitars and heavy keyboards.

Susan I'd list the instrument(s) in the local area free flyers/sell
sheets/mags that you find laying around at the local stores
and list them as pick-up only.
They call to come get the instrument and you arrange where to meet.
Probably a place other than your home.

That makes it cheap, simple and no issues after the sell. "As is" receipt.

Easy to cover a large local area and if you drive to the nearest big town
list in their free flyers...increased range.

Good thread and great advice. I have an Washburn extended cutaway EC36 that I am considering selling and was wondering about Ebay. The guitar is one of only 500 made back in the hair metal days and so the market is small but also vebig $$$. Heard of them going for upwards of $2000 which makes me a little nervous about the whole process of selling/shipping. But I know there is no market locally here for it. Thanks for answering a lot of the things I had thought about!

Thanks for the additional replies. There's a place not too far from me where I might be able to get some boxes. Naturally, the UPS place is way off in the other direction, but that's OK. Then there's the Staples that's way off in the other other direction...

I'd rather not do a pickup, since I'm not really near anywhere convenient to arrange that. I'm fine with packing it myself, it's just a matter of getting the right materials.

Thanks again-

-Susan

Update:

I checked with UPS, and their rates are somewhat lower than FedEx. The destination makes a *huge* difference, so I hope the winner is close by!

I'm still in search of heavy-duty shipping boxes, but I might let them do the packing after all so they can't blame me if something goes wrong. The Ovation is a real bear because it's too deep for their standard guitar boxes. The only ones I could find locally are too lightweight.

I might go with "Buyer pays shipping over" a certain amount if I can figure out how to do that.

I'm trying to gather info about the Fernandes. The headstock places it in the 1987-1996/7 date range acc. to this site

I don't remember exactly when I bought it, but it was probably around 1994. It still has the plastic on the pick guard, and not a scratch anywhere. Here are (bad) pics of the headstock and pickups:

The fretboard is rosewood and the neck maple. I'm looking for info on the electronics and the body so I can write an accurate description. There's no visible serial #.

I posted on a guitar forum asking for info, but if anyone here knows where I could find specs that would be great. I spent a fair amount of time Googling yesterday and browsing through old Japanese catalogs, without much success.

Thanks-

-Susan
