Starise

You can set up your own tunings on this guitar.  I only used drop D before this and even then not very often. You guitar aces have your ears acclimated to those odd tunings.  I need a little help in that regard.

For me learning one system and then getting used to it and then learning another system can be a challenge, kind of like alternate scales. I can do it but I will need to spend weeks working with the "new"tuning. In the end I'll probably only use them if it is somehow a better way to get where I want to go. The guitar also has 1/2 step lower which might help with a tough vocal and it has 1 whole step lower, but the jury is still out on this one for me.

Which alternate tunings do you make the most use of? I plan to play it on Sunday for most of the set on some of the fender and acoustic settings using variax only. Practice went pretty well last night so we'll see ;)

I am a huge Jimmy Page fan, so alternate tunings were unavoidable. :) The Tea Party (unmistakably Led Zep fans)  also have a few good acoustic songs using alternate tunings.
One of the common ones I like is basic open C tuning (CGCGCE). I also like the CGCGCC variation - wrote quite a few bits of music using that one. DGCGCD, which Page used on The Rain Song is also a cool one.

Usually, I start with one of the good old ones and occasionally make adjustments on the way if needed - I mean, what I stumble upon probably already exists, it's just that I never happened to learn it. They just open up so much possibilities in terms of voicings, playing both rhythm and lead/embellishments at once.

Heh...  I was going to reply when I noticed there was a page 2 and, what do you know?, there's a post by Rain saying exactly what I was going to say.

Like I said earlier though, make sure you try to avoid listening to the unamplified strings or you'll really mess your head up!  It's very weird to play a guitar strung from EADGBE and hear DGCGCD out of the speaker...

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!
