Just got home and she's doing OK.  she's shaky and nauseous, but that's normal for her when she has any medical procedures with local or general anesthetics.

I believe she'll be fine after some rest today.  but we won't know if the steroids did any good or not for a couple of days.  the doc said it wouldn't help much for 2-3 days.

thanks Julien, good to know.  she's never had any skin problems that I'm aware of, but I'll know if that comes up.

you're not the first person I've talked to who said MSG is a trigger, but that's not her problem, we don't do MSG anyway.
Reece,
I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's condition.  I pray she gets the relief she seeks.

Regarding the MSG, I have a friend who has periondically suffered from migranes.  He traced it down to artificial sweeteners in sugarless gum and diet drinks.  Certainly worth considering if your wife does either of these.

edit to add:  Reading further,I realize the car accident may have attributed to her condition.  I hope they (doctors) are able to find the underlying cause to the migranes.  I'll lift up a prayer to both of you as this has got to be taxing on each of you.

FWIW - My food alergy migraines traced down to some combination of too much cheddar cheese (there's something in cheddar that's not in other types of cheese), too many milk products with lactose and too much processed food.  Add caffeine and excessive quantities of meat or sugar (all of which heat up the body) and *BOOM*.

In moderation I can eat all of the above (gee, where have I heard that before?).

A lot of the diet drinks have Aspertame in them..that has a lot of Phenylalinine in it..that really can get to some people over time...

thanks for your thoughts and prayers, guys.

but it's not food allergies for her.  she has cracked and misaligned disks in her neck which cause the muscles in her neck to work harder than they should and that stresses her muscles in the neck and causes tension which eventually triggers the migraines.

or that's the theory from her nuerologist and pain management doctors at this point.

I hope she does better Reece.  I recommend a good massage therapist.  I've had back problems for years finally resulting in surgery.  Massage therapy helped bring the muscles out of spasm, and also released all the other muscles that you don't realize that are involved.  By good massage therapist I mean one that doesn't do fluff massages and crystal hugging but does sports massage and deep tissue therapy.

Wow
Prayers are with ya brother.
I know how tough it can be on both of you.

My wife has the migrane thing bad as well. They give her some meds that have to be broken up cause in Arkansas they could give it as one perscription but in Michigan its against the law to do it the way shes used to. So the doctors break it up to where she can get what she needs, it just comes in multiple pills.  Sorry I dont recall the actual meds.

When the meds are past the point of not working, she has to go in for some sort of shot that makes her bed-ridden for 3 days afterwards. You can really see how they suffer when they hit, but all you can do is support 'em when they hit.

I really hope they can find and/or fix whats the main trigger and maybe that will slow the headaches down a bit.

Thoughts are with you two

My thoughts are with her and you Reece. As a former cluster headache sufferer I know how tough it is on family. I luckily found my trigger after 20 years, and have been free from them for about 7 years. I hope she finds relief soon.

Hey Beagle.

Your wife's treatment - is this something new that's being tried-out now?  I haven't been offered this one yet by my specialists.  Please let me know how it works out for her.

As some of you might remember/know, I am off work due to the totally disabling effects of near(or oft) daily chronic severe migraine.  Prior to certain severe migraines, I go through something like a temporary psychosis and I treat people (mainly my dear, long-suffering wife) like crap.  It's as if all 'governors' are shut off and I can't control my negative thoughts/manias.  Horrible watching yourself go nutsoid and not be able to do anything about it.  Then the pain sets in after that and then it's "holy cow, kill me now" sort of thing.  My migraine triggers are not food related, but either barometric-change related or positive-ion-burst related (as what happens on the cusps of large weather/storm systems, full-moons, solar-flares and high-winds).  There is also the possibility/evidence my many heart issues (bi-cuspid valve regurgitation, heart-murmur, enlarged heart and aorta) could be related, as per some studies done at Stanford U.  Ultimately, only God knows.

I pray your wife does well with this treatment.  Let the board know as soon as you see some progress.  I'd be very interested.  I am currently trying to 'stay clean' - keep myself less dependent on pain meds, as the on/off process of narcotics use is so hard on the system/psyche.  By God's grace, I'll stay sane and wait for the good hours to roll around, which thankfully, they do.

It's the partners/spouses of migraineurs that suffer greatly too, I'd just like to note.  Everyone: send up your prayers not just for Beagle's wife, but for Beagle.  Enduring through and suffering with another's pain is tough-going!

Re:Shots in her neck... 2012/04/30 21:23:35 (permalink)
thanks Mike & Randy

Randy - glad you've got it under control.  I know it would be a major problem just trying to live like that.  That's why I keep hoping we can control Beverly's - she's not been able to do the things she loves in 2 years.

Martin - I knew you were off from work due to disabling problems, but did not know the extent of your illness.  that's a really difficult struggle.  I will certainly lift you and your wife up as well and I definitely appreciate the prayers for me and mine.  I pray you can find some relief.

Tim - and all - this weekend I think she was doing much better.  she still complained about having some problems, but she spent the entire afternoon Saturday outside playing in the flower gardens - something she loves to do and hasn't been able to do it for 2 years.  she also mowed the yard - that's a major accomplishment.  I'm not able to mow because of severe allergies and she doesn't mind, so that's something she normally takes care of, but hasn't been able to for the last 2 years and we've had to hire someone to do it.

so I think she has really improved a lot this weekend.

I don't really know for certain how she's doing today because I'm not there to observe her - I'm on another business trip in Austin.  She's told me she's doing OK, but she tells me that when she's not doing OK, too.

anyway - I'm hoping the procedure has helped - it seemed to for the weekend anyway.  thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers!

That sounds like good news Beagle. Glad she is doing better. A headache is usually regarded as a minor thing to most. The kind of headaches she had would probably put any one of us down. I am lucky only to have had a few bad headaches and they went away. I can't imagine an ongoing migraine headache....
