Ride the Lightning is the one that really started it all for me. I was a die hard fan until the Black album, at which time I somehow lost my interest for the genre.

I like the Black album and am a fan of everything up to that. But that was the end of the train for me. Ride The Lightning is still probably my favorite.

Load, re-load and the ones that followed...... I think they were trying to get the worst possible drum sound ever and succeeded.

Here's a behind the scenes look at how Metallica created the snare sound for St. Anger:

...
I just listened to the Black Album and it seems like there must be something more to discover.

best regards,
mike
Nope, nothing more to discover.  They are one of the groups who's popularity I never understood.  From the Viking garbled vocals to the lame two finger power chords I find nothing interesting about this band except that they sell records...go figure.

only the first four albums are real, and of those RTL is my personal fave; i have a soft spot for the progressive nature of AJFA too. the Black album is a great rock record, but it's not really Metallica, though it has some great riffs. from then on each album is progressively weaker, Death Magnetic has the sound but no songs, Lars is the worst drummer in metal currently, with Kirk winner of 'most overused wah pedal in history' award.

Memorare debut album 'Philistine' available now http://blackwoodproductio...philistine-digipack-cd

@amiller What albums have you listened to? @all My tops are in order: 1. Master of Puppets 2. Kill 'em All 3. Ride The Lightning 4. And Justice For All On my other post i said i like the debut most, and yes that is true especially because i felt the "Thrash" most there, but in terms of musicality MoP wins. I like One on the black album because of the guitar work, but i generally stopped at MoP. I'm not a big fan though, even if it was one of the first bands i listened to.

Check out my band's song on YouTube!

ha-Best of Metallica-greatest hits-all killer no filler.
i love compilation albums, especially if i`only marginally interested in the  band as you get their "best" work in a single package.
for a while there i adored Lars`s kick sound and tried to emulate it in my mixes until it started to dominate the songs in later albums.then i saw the doco and realized it was the ego not the kick that stood out at the expense of the bass and rythmn guitars.

ps:"Satan" is my favourite track-not sure if it`s tongue in cheek or what-but it tickles my fancy.
cheers

Yeah, if you didn't already buy into Metallica as a kid, I think they'll be pretty hard to appreciate. You need to give them a lot of goodwill and benefit of the doubt...
