I have been saving for the Roland Octa Capture, with future 2x unit stack up in mind.

At least one forum member here reported that the working 2x unit stop working together after upgrading to the latest firmware.

Is this issue solved or is it a none issue ?

I don't know. Never tried using two units together, myself.

Reading this made me panic, but I've just pulled my ZED-R16 forward to check and the firewire port is still there.

Phew.... back to making music.

You mean my newish MOTU Audio Express is already obsolete??  Well ain't that somethin?  Tempus Fugits.

Hey yoropal,do you find the integration of the MOTU W7 x64 drivers OK[FW and USB]?

It's just MANY have said they seem to only work correctly on Mac's,and do you,or have you run it in USB at all?[since it can do both]

I keep getting interested in one of MOTUS interfaces, only to read/hear of W7 x64 horror stories, plus bad support,if your Windows based supposedly.

Bob.

Firewire is not dead...
Less popular with the general-purpose user (than it was in the past)... but not dead... and it won't disappear in one-fell-swoop.  That process will take a good long while (witness PCI slots)

Firewire is dead but there will always be fossil collectors as well as those who wont accept long hair is decades out of date!

it doesn't look so much like the demise of FW as a shift of that technology from being a contender as a mainstream  interconnect standard to being a specialized connection for certain high-performance apps.  This whole discussion is really just a subset of the 'tablets are replacing desktops' trend. It's true, but has no bearing on what we do.  Stuff may become more expensive on the desktop (FW) side, but also better and faster as the need to provide options for a low-end personal use market will subside.

USB audio (like everything else) depends on the drivers.
That's why Seth mentioned Roland AND RME.

<sheesh>...

I guess I got this just in time?

I've been running on Vista32 for the last few years and just recently received two new computers... One a liquid-cooled HP Project Blackbird (quad-3GHz 4GB RAM) which I've installed Vista64 (It's all I have) and I await having the cash to replace/purchase both an audio interface as well as an 8-port midi interface (Yes, I use hardware)... and the king! A Mac Pro with dual Xeon Quad-3.2GHz (16GB RAM!).... In need of a copy of win7 Ultimate as well as audio interface and 8-port MIDI interface...

I have no money so I've spent the last few days searching for possible options and I was thinking of getting the focusrite saffire pro40 as I've worked with it and understand how to get it's firewire working...

No I'm back to square 1 searching for a USB interface? I don't have the slightest idea what's gonna satisfy me there.... and finding the 8-port midi interface is a bit difficult... the MOTU MIDI Express XT seems a good bet...

Maybe by the time I have cash, thunderbolt will be in place? we'll see...

Thanks for bringing this stuff up before I threw out my cash... I'm suffering now for the same type of issues with my current gear (Mixtreme192 which is PCI (not PCIe)andwith only a beta driver for 64bit and it's got a caveat that it only supports oup to 2GB RAM with the Mixtreme192 so it's pointless.... and my midi interfaces are both old emagic Unitor 8's (serial), so they're long dead.... I can get them working on Vista32, but there are no 64bit drivers for it.... and the Mac doesn't even have a serial port....

Upgrade's are getting more expensive every day! <sigh>...

Keni

Keni,

If you're looking for a USB 2 interface that can achieve latency as low as the best firewire interfaces, I'd check out Roland or RME. Vastly different price points, of course. Roland's Octa-Capture is killer if you need an eight channel interface (can stack up to two units). Also, you can stack up to three Roland UM-3Gs, which are tri-port MIDI interfaces, to get a total of nine in and nine out.

Not trying to obviously wave the Roland flag, but I have used all this stuff so can confidently recommend it.

SP

Thanks Seth...

The RME will probably be too expensive for me but I will look into the octa-capture.... I don't think I'll need more than 16 i/o, but I'm a little surprised that you can only stack 2 of them... Limit of USB 2.0? It's very sad to lose working gear... I am currently using an old DAW as a web machine (it was long ago decommissioned as DAW) which has 32 i/o of old Soundscape Mixtreme interface (two Mixtreme cards and 4 breakout boxes).... I haven't needed that many inputs in quite some time as I do so few live bands in the studio... My current has a single Mixtreme192 and has served me well for the last few years... But PCI is dead (only PCIe now)... So I actually own 4 Mixtreme cards and I have to "throw them away"? <sigh>...

Same with the Unitor8's (serial - I own two)) they work fine, but can't be installed in the new machines (no 64bit drivers will ever happen for these)...

What a waste of gear! I'm sure glad we don't suffer this way with musical instruments.... My oldest Strat still plugs into the newest amps...

Maybe someone will build an "Old Box" which can house/connect all these old things to the latest hardware? That would be a good investment! ;-)

Meanwhile.... Nice job on the latest webinar... I had to watch it after-the-fact as my internet is too slow for the live event...

...and thanks again for the suggestions....

Keni
