Taking a break from my so-called Prog explorations for a moment (though the band below IS listed on ProgArchives as being "related"). Also took a break from my usually wimpy French Vanilla Folgers... Right now I'm blasting a LOT of Iron Maiden and sucking down some nice Folger's Classic Roast (made with an extra, heaping scoop). Ahh...

Metal, yet not Metal. Listening to Iron Butterfly while drinking intentionally overstrong Folgers Classic Roast (three heaping scoops - just because). Anyway... QUESTION: There's already a lot of metal bands in this thread that I've never heard of. Is there a website that lists/discusses/categorizes all of these bands similar to how ProgArchives does with Progressive music?

Sorry craig, I didn't mean to be so dry, my freakin' neck gets stiff to the point of locking up,when I sit at the computer for a few minutes, and it was time to stand up..................oh yeah it was time Any way the guys from that link I gave you, they e-mailed about a year ago asking if I wanted to publish a couple of my old demo's with them. I guess they thought they were unique to the era(1983/84) even though they are recorded dreadfully. Oh, and don't under estimate what Iron Butterfly's 1 guitar lick did to help "metal" get going.

This thread needs a... 'Cause I'm not done saving all of the names of the artists I've never heard of (sound familiar?). At least there were "only" about 5,000 Prog artists - supposedly there are over 39,000 for Metal!

bitflipper Oh, you kids! Metal guitar is easy, there's an app for that. How about some heavy metal saxophone from the old school (before the word "metal" was even coined as a musical term)? (Caution: more than 3 chords!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBfCzhYbWBk I am sipping some home-made Starbucks as I listen to this... Hey Bit, what WAS this before it got deleted from YouTube? (Curiousity and all that you know! )

Just having my first exposure to Agalloch. I'm only a couple of songs into Ashes Against The Grain and I completely love the music. It's even good enough that I might be able to overlook the horrible Cookie Monster vocals. I guess I'm getting old, but I'll never understand why people think that hearing someone vomit into a microphone is in any way musical... *Sigh...*

Agalloch are very good, Craig, if you like them then try Alcest and Les Discrets - it's kinda known as shoegaze black metal - Les Discrets use no trad BM vox and Alcest very few.If you did get used to the shrieks then Fen, Altar of Plagues, Ulver and Wolves in the Throne Room are great, atmospheric bands. Also, more proggy and less metally (now), but i recommend you try out Anathema (the last two albums are simply immense, but I love all their stuff) and Grey Waters.

One of my favorite metal bands - fellow quebecers, Voïvod. Not for every one and an acquired taste. Still, imho, one of the most interesting guitar players in the genre. No power chords there... http://www.youtube.com/wa...zY&feature=related The first 2 albums were rather raw speed/trash metal. The 3 following albums - Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss and Nothingface - are amazing. Then they lost themselves for a bit to meet the expectations of their new label, line up started to change, and they went through various phases, from prog metal back to trash metal before long time fan Jason Newstead finally joined them for their last studio effort and a posthumous album after guitar player Denis D'amour died. Musicians praised them, from Soundgarden to Faith No More to Metallica - and I definitely can hear their influence when I hear some less mainstream metal or industrial metal.
