I already mentioned this btw...

Midi: Make sure only the Midi Ports you are using for Keyboard/Controllers are enabled especially the generic Window midi driver that will tie up your audio driver for a start. Start with your input keyboard and enable other devices if you have them one at a time. btw the crash when you have no choice but to reboot you might find that power cycling your midi device(s) may release the Sonar task running in the background.

See post #14 there may be more there you missed.

It means start minimal and introduce things until you find the actual source of the problem.  I went to the trouble of writing it especially for you...

That was why I tried shutting down all MIDI ports and it did indeed solve the hanging on crash issue. The crashing itself is still repeatable, and crashes the same way on my laptop as my destkop. For the moment I'm just going to write it off as something not to do (though it is unacceptable to have a crash when people click) and go on to more intensive testing of other things to see how it holds up.

Cool it's some progress at least, if you don't have to keep rebooting while homing in on the causes.

Sorry to hear about your crashes.

I run Sonar X1d on a Win 7 x64 system, with a lot of other stuff on it as well.
It works perfect for me, and I am not even close to your hardware set-up.

Try a fresh install, and also get the latest update if you haven't yet. Also check the latest drivers of M-audio and other hardware you might have connected. Run Windows update...

I guess you checked for Viruses. even though that seem like a long shot

Wish you the best of luck, its an amazing program:)

It might be a memory, RAM, issue. I had an experience with bad RAM that caused a whole host of issues. Took the bad stick out (temp on 12 Gigs now) and everything is running fine - Sonar X1 Produced Expanded with the latest D patch; Win 7 Pro 64 Bit. Hope things work out better for you. :)

MSI P67A-GD65

Your motherboard (similar to mine) does not natively support PCI, but instead uses a bridge chip to translate PCIe to PCI.   This is why my Echo MIA card had problems with MIDI on my new system, and why I ultimately bought a QuadCapture USB interface.  I love the QuadCapture, which has worked flawlessly, but the MIA MIDI was great too, just had buggy MIDI performance on my new computer.

If you want to read a more detailed discussion on this topic of MIDI and PCI/PCIe check out this thread on gearslutz forum
