I've noticed this up here in Jersey about a year or so ago.

If need be I use Mooch's "hover" method but mostly I just pinch tight till I'm nice and comfy on my home turf.

Possibly if they just provided those seat covers (like they used to), all these various "techniques" might very well be avoided.

Most of the jobs in my working career have involved driving. I learned to always have some moist towelettes handy. Preferably the antibacterial kind.
And paper towels.
The highway rest area facilities in Texas were not very clean whan I lived there.
And most were open-air. It got real cold in them in the winter.

In GA most decent public restrooms have those things. If I have to "sit" I usually try to find a Chik-Fil-A resturant, they keep a CLEAN restroom.

My pet peeve with toilets are those older residential toilets that have the small oval seat (obviously designed by a woman). There is no room in the front and I don't want my anatomy pressed up against the toilet seat. It is awkward, I usually use a "buffer" of paper.

Oh... and with all the touring of cruddy dives I've done in my life coupled with a nervous butthole I've learned to hover very effectively. I rarely miss.
