My only comment, at the risk of losing my status as "thePianist," is that I use True Pianos Amber and find it very pleasing and musical. I have tried PianoTek demo and agree it's superior, but everyone's ears are different, and familiarity is a big part of what we like or dislike. I actually sold Steinway Pianos for a few years in the late 90's and having ;played a ton of them, they can sound radically different from each other, being hand-crafted items rather than mass produced pianos. And the DSF Steinway doesn't seem to have the "body" it deserves--some notes just seem clunky to me. At least the Amber Piano is consistent, if not spectacular. And the price is right, heh heh.
I'd love to hear the critique of True Piano Amber by the folks in this thread, as I am shopping for yet another Piano VST, and right now I'm leaning toward's Ivory II Grand, or PianoTeq. And, BTW, I was on Garritan's site, and I think his "Approved" Steinway VST is no where to be found anymore.
Thanks for an interesting thread, folks.

Thanks for your input.

If you buy the Ivory II - please return to the thread and tell us your impression of it compared to True Pianos.

The sound of a piano is just as subjective as anything else related to music, so you just have to find what sounds good to you. I like the sound of big Steinways, and I also want my pianos to sound as natural as possible. When I listen to demos of a lot of virtual pianos, to me they sound like "a collection of notes from a piano", but they don't quite sound like "a piano". That's the best way I can express it. My personal search for the ultimate piano led me to Sampletekk's Black Grand Close. It's on sale right now for about $25, so if your tastes are similar to mine, you may want to check it out. It does require Kontakt (which I have and really like)or Halion (which I know nothing about), so that is a factor too.

Cliff:

For accuracy compared to a real grand piano action feel, I'm partial to keyboard controllers that use Fatar keyboard modules.  Studiologic is Fatar's brand but I believe other manufacturers may use Fatar keyboard modules in their products.

I learned about Fatar through learning about my "classic" Alesis QS8, which is based on an older Fatar keyboard module.  (My QS8 is 15 years old.)  When the Alesis QS7s and QS8s came out, the keyboard action on them was heralded as the best for the money.  As an example, on my QS8, I can actually feel the hammer's little "kick" as it hits the string, even at low velocity.  (Of course, there is no string, but their action simulates this.)

Here's a link to one of the Fatar's current SL-Series controllers: SL 990 Pro

You should check them out if you can,
Paul
