Platinum Samples.... No offense meant about setting up mics and hit record... my point was that sampling drums is actually easier than sampling a guitar correctly. I believe you when you say $100K plus but that in itself doesn't make it a hard thing to do... I got cha that somebody that knows what they are doing has to setup the gear (mics), the room has to be right and you have to record tons of kit piece hits... However, it being easier to setup for a guitar sampling session, getting useable samples to use for the guitar on every string/every fret with multiple samples takes ON A TON of time. You would be surprised on how just a little different tension on the pick does to the timbre of the samples... I actually have your AJ library for BFD (it is really well produced).. but you have to admit that once the mics/desk is all set up... on drums you need to record many hits on each ARTIC to get a realistic sample drum set. Sorry that I gave the impression that sampling a drum is easy, my statement was for comparative purposes only. Jim

EDIT = I just skimmed that sfz myself... we all knew this was only a 4 layer kit. and its crap. its poorly sampled crap. Is this what is in, "the big expensive, and overly marketed, "Steven Slate Drums." The sfz file posted above shows snare 1 group has 20 wav files associated with it. Looks like there are 5 velocity layers and 4 wave files for each layer. The software generates a random number and if it falls within the boundries of lorand and hirand then that wav file gets played for that velocity layer.

Certainly not as extravagant as some sample sets but nice nonetheless for a certain sound. You see, this is a large part of the issue. If only two or three regions (or layers as you referred to them) are "functional" then at least 2x4 waves are not being heard/used at all. Essentially 2/5 (arguably 3/5) of the samples are going to waste. Enough to make a good kit sound not so great.

And only came to bad conclusions about them, after hearing that his kits in Session Drummer, really do not blow me away. In fact they are terrible. maybe a good sound hear or there. nothing that really blows me away. i dunno Now, I've asked SToons to post his modified SFZ, haven't I... Except, he hasn't done so yet. So I've really got nothing to go by, except what I hear. I don't know... either way, I think I'm far, far, far, from buying steven slate anything right now. lots of these vst companies are over-marketing.

Your patience in waiting for the SFZ is rather underwhelming. You think this is some irrelevant joke, some easy task? Tell you what, when you have the skills to take over this task feel free to do so and I'll say thanks as I question every friggin' stupid aspect of things I don't understand. How's that sound?

EDIT: i have just re-read this whole thread and i cant find anywhere you talk about where you got the data from for this? you tell me to learn how to read, yet,i cant read anything thats not here man ?? so if you dont own sonar x1(that includes session drummer 3) then where did you get this velocity data from? was it from sonar 8.5 ? thats was released 5 years ago? at one point i see you make refference to session drummer 3 being a cakewalk instrument. maybe you bought sd3 recently..but why would you..you own 8.5 right? see this is whats confusing. you are only giving us the data that you want to give us. you have no info in your signiture that would tell what version you are using. nor when confronted about where you got this data from you easily just avoid the question by saying "get a life".."learn to read." well im reading, problem is...im not seeing.

Chuck, I asked you from square one, and others who may have been initially confused, to just follow if they could not contribute as this was complex and likely boring. You declined and seemed to have felt personally insulted instead of following so you would understand the context of my point. This post is yet another example of your attempts to confuse and siderail the issue and yet I've just got started. I don't get it. One more negative comment and I stop responding to you, simple as that, I'm really not interested in confrontation. Your choice. An SFZ file is a set of instructions that will be pretty much universal in it's application. In simple terms the SFZ is cross-platform format like a midi file. Like a midi file an SFZ has as much relevance in X1 as it does in X1. Get a life means find something better to do than disrupt this thread if you have nothing positive to contribute. Learn to read means I should not have to repeat myself like a parrot because you choose not to follow. The question you asked was addressed when: 1. I initially asked if the SSlate Drums were fixed in X1 and 2. when I subsequently asked for someone to post the contents of the SFZ file. If you want to read more into this then I can't control that, sorry. Ask yourself if you have tried to contribute anything positive to this discussion.

bladetragic I've honestly never really used Session Drummer. So is this a matter of the software itself??? Or is it just the content w/in the software that is the issue, and if so are expansions from companies like Platinum Samples and Sonic Reality a viable solution to the problem??? The software is essentially two different pieces. Well, three in a sense. For one there is Session Drummer. Think of that as the sample player only with a mixer attached. The second piece, the SFZ file which you load, is a set of instructions -and- controls. All the knobs you can turn in samplers like Filters, LFO's, ADSR Envelopes etc. can be 'invisibly' set up in this file and subsequently controlled thru midi data. You just can't see them in Session Drummer's interface. I don't know for a fact if SDRummer supports every feature of the SFZ format but the included Cakewalk SFZ Player does. It is detailed here: http://www.cakewalk.com/DevXchange/article.aspx?aid=108 and discussed here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr08/articles/sonartech_0408.htm The third piece would be the samples which are also controlled via the SFZ file. Essentially SDrummer is a sampler whose interface is primarily text in a document. Session Drummer is essentially a glorified SF2 (soundfont) with a prettier interface. Expansions are definitely a viable alternative, however as with all sample content there are no guarantees - buyer beware. There is no problem with Session Drummer. In this case even the content (the waves) were good, only the instructions (the SFZ) were questionable and, as was demonstrated, the instructions can in fact be modified to get better results. My "rant" (discussion) was concerning the fact that the content providers were unneccesarily guilty of the same quality control issues that plagues much software. There are things I'd rather do than have to edit provided content to make it useable. Oh well, I am happy to see that the Slate Drums can sound as good, as my initial impressions were...<barf>. Someone who actually knows the format should be able to do a better job than I can, hope to see that happen eventually.

But I've been curious about it as an option when I am mobile and using my laptop to lay down quick ideas. Platinum Samples makes some really good expansions and if their offerings for other software like Superior, BFD are indicative of what they'll bring to Session Drummer then I might entertain them. Sounds like it's just a matter of whether or not the author of the content takes the time to do the necessary programming work to make an excellent library.
