I'm not saying S1V2 is better or worse than X1D ....... but ........ once you have spent a day or two running a "gapless" DAW it is *very* frustrating and annoying to go back. I do a lot of work in both, and have yet to find a function or action that even makes S1V2 glitch let alone gap. ......... however........ on the other hand, for an overall [ almost ] full-featured DAW, X1 is *extremely* hard to go past. ..... I'm also starting to think the reason for the long-lead-time to X1E or X2 [ whatever the next version is called ] is due to some major audio-engine re-coding to try and make it much more "gapless " ..... at least I hope I'm right. TomG

"all things to music studio's???" Studio One v2 FWIW, No current DAW app could be legitimately labeled "All things to music studios". Studio One v2 has some nice features/attributes... but is still missing some of the refinements from long-standing apps like Sonar, Cubase, Logic. It's kind of a double-edge sword either way... Go with a long establish app, and it'll have many small refinements... but also some "legacy" issues. Go with a newly designed app and it'll be missing many years of small refinements... but you have the advantage of no legacy issues. I think the reason you don't see much clamoring over DAW apps is that the dust has settled. X1 is running pretty well (for most folks) at this point. Those that like Studio One v2 have had time to settle-in. In the end, they're just tools. If suddenly the world had but any one of the major DAW apps, I'm sure most would find a way to still make music. Lucky for us... we have many decent choices. I have most of the major PC DAW applications. My over-all favorite is X1. It's not perfect... and it doesn't have every possible feature I'd like... but (for me) it's the one that "clicks".

soens We interrupt this "debate whether or not to have a debate" for some late breaking news! Due to America's financial downturn and general world economic upheaval, three major DAW makers have decided to merge into one monopoly inducing conglomerate. Avid, Cakewalk, and Presonus have made plans to unite their efforts in creating a universal computer based digital recording program simply called "The DAW!". The CEO's of all three companies will retain their positions but will require their software teams to collaborate extensively on future releases of their soon-to-be famous and industry-standard recording software, "which is sure to 'WOW!' everyone who uses it," a spokesman for the three companies said. The now familiar titles: ProTools, Sonar, and Studio One will cease to exist as we've known them. In their stead will be a new super-hybrid, incorporating the most popular bells and whistles of each version into a "one size fits all" program sure to meet the demands and desires of everyone using it. The list of features and tools will be exhaustively endless yet the program is promised to be so easy to navigate "even a panhandling illiterate musician caveman could figure it out without reading the manual," said one CEO. They expect this new enterprize to forever change the face of the DAW industry and is poised to set a new precedent for how DAW software companies work. These changes could explain why there hasn't been any new releases in conjunction with the usual time frames expected by avid loyal users of current software and why things have been very quiet lately. Sales of this new hybrid DAW are expected to exceed everyone's expectations, make every user exited and happy to use it, while at the same time making the CEOs of this new enterprize very, very, veeeeeery rich. The cost of the new title is expected to exceed the expectations and bank accounts of anyone attempting to purchase a (renewable) one year licensing lease fee, which will be the new entry level approach to selling the software. "But once users find out how simple, easy, and fun the new software is... they won't care!" ... an unidentified spokesman said. DAW 3.0! Let The Revolution Begin! Now back to our irregularly scheduled debate! Footnote: Expected release is January 1, 2022 or 2025. In the mean time, just use the existing product you own but call it The DAW

Jim Roseberry So I'm just curious...what is the advantage to gapless audio? IMO, gap-less audio is "less annoying" Someone please clear this up for me....less annoying when you're doing what, auditioning loops and synths....what other reasons might it be necessary or even annoying? Sorry for my ignoarance but I haven't run across issues with the workflow I do. Thanks very much, Randy

A sort of comparison would be the difference between having your project stop every 2 beats versus almost never, even while inserting or deleting audio, loops, plugins or tracks endlessly. It makes for a more creative writing, mixing & editing process. Someone here once compared it to power steering. Although X1 remains to be my main DAW I can appreciate the advantages of a gapless engine.

A lot of people like to have a 4, 8, 16, even 32 bar loop going forever while vibing and recording never stopping engine, putting in plugs, synths etc. any function without a hiccup of the sound.. That is smooth !Ableton does it, and from what I see here, SV2 does too. LJ

Roland needs to make a killer 24 track mixer that goes with Sonar. They should just do what Presonus did. Their 24 track board is simply awesome.

Well the thread does read, Sonar Vs Studio v2 and from my point of view, I would say Sonar wins hands down. It's been through so many upgrade cycles that it's a more mature and refined DAW. And soon a new version will be released with additional features that users have requested.

I finally downloaded and installed the Studio One V2 Demo... Its so obvious what they ripped off... Cockos Reaper... Studio One is definitely a more beautiful version of Reaper, with a simplified more logical workflow. Justin Frankel must be going nuts! Presonus could have just bought Reaper, re-did the gui, and fix its terrible workflow. I've already uninstalled Studio One.. I've had Reaper for years and I can not stand Reaper. So.. I'm highly unlikely to buy and use anything that reminds me so much of Reaper... I can see why a lot of people are enjoying Studio One though. It is beautiful, and the audio is gapless. That is huge! I do not discount that. However.. Gapless Audio in Sonar X2.. Would be a game changer. Sonar's feature list goes on for a very, very long time.. Sonar has pages, upon pages of things that can be listed as, "a feature." Reaper, and Studio One, and a lot of the other newer daws, do not have a feature set that go on, "nearly forever," like Sonar, Cubase, Pro-Tools, Digital Performer, etc... etc..

For someone with just 368 Forum Posts you come across as very intelligent, knowledgeable and experienced in regards to software and hardware. I enjoy reading your post because they're very insightful. And for you to be using Sonar - it confirms that I made a wise choice too if someone like you is using it to make their music.

Another pointless thread, from a community that has so much knowledge, experience and expertise to share.... Shame. I've been with CW since 1993 and after a year struggling with X1 left for S1V2. TBH I've not looked back. I still have X1 on my PC but only to transfer old projects if I need them. Not looking to stir things up, but seriously, there is no best DAW. Whatever gets the job done for you is the best DAW. Anyway, enough said, I'm back off to my true gapless audio and logical GUI to make some music (minus any automation issues and 10 year old audio bugs of course ;-) ). sb

I don't like the GUI in Studio One. I was demoing it and it reminds me of a clunky version of Cubase and not in a good way. I would very much so take Cubase over it. I hear nothing but great things about studio one however.

It's never pointless (well I would say that) Comparing products can be a good thing if you do your research then you can see where you are at interms of using something that is user friendly and consistency. Also shows us where we stand, if there was a league table of DAWs it may read something like this: Pro Tools Cubase Logic Studio One Ableton Live Reason Nuendo Sonar Garage Band other etc.
