Tom Jones on the other hand.......is it me, or does his voice get better with age?

In certain very important ways, yes it does ol pal.  Still a force of nature that ol feller.  His new take on Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song" is a revelation.  Killer diller.

When I heard Macca in 2001/2002 (can't quite recall the year) he was spot on.

When did people start calling him that (Macca)? I'd never heard or read that nickname until fairly recently - as avid a Beatles fan as I am...

Sounds almost as lame as Team GB, but that just my 2 cents. ;)

I wasn't going to reply and I did get to see the entire opening ceremony and enjoyed it immensely. But I totally agree with Spacey's several posts here in relation to older icons/bands in general and to Sir Paul in particular - I can add that I would not be here even at THIS small scale of music creation and songwriting and recording, if not for the works and performances of this guy that thrilled, amazed, and inspired me for decades. And for me, music is one area in which what we create flies in the face of age. Long after we're gone, the songs go on. While Sir Paul McCartney is with us still, I will listen and I will enjoy every minute. Same with anyone else I particularly admire and respect, in any other form of art, sport, or other venue. To me, it's all good. ~ John

Well without the Beatles audio production as whole might be very different or at least much farther behind than where it is today. I'm not a rabid fan or anything but I sure do respect them. Could you imagine how difficult putting together something like Sgt. Pepper must have been with the equipment they had access to? Mind boggling. Granted a lot of the credit has to go to the engineers but the Fab Four made them earn their dinner that's for sure.

I am reading "All you need is ears" by George Martin at the mo and I was just reading about Sgt. Pepper. All done with several 4 track machines with sub mixes continuously being bounced down to 1 track. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that.

It's obvious why Sir Paul (never heard of Macca until this thread) continues to tour.  He's got all those ex-wives to pay off...

@daryl... Exactly. After that mayhem someone somewhere said "THIS IS BOLLOCKS" and work started getting done to allow recording/playback/mixing/engineering on more than two or four tracks at a time. It really boggles me how smart those old school engineers had to be. I mean not that we on the forum ain't all smart and shiz but darn... that's some hardcore brainiacing. That album still would be a pain in the buttocks to duplicate today even with all we have learned and developed. Everyone who has ever recorded anything in the past... what, 50 years? has to respect what those guys did and thank them. Maybe I'll give 'er a listen while I read my BFD manual. Oh look... some kind person uploaded it to the youtubes... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3wg9UQxU5k :-)

That "Macca" has been quite widely used in the Nordic Countries. I can imagine it roots back to swedish speaking folks, it sort of fits the way they create nicknames, but I don't really know.

I wonder if we could consider that they may keep on performing for the sake of their fans?
Considering how long Paul may have been waiting to go on, what conditions the monitor mix was in at the moment and various other things that may have been going on, I'd say he recovered well and most of his bit was quite enjoyable.

I saw him when he turned 60 and he sang for a long time and didn't miss a lick.  Hearing the songs that I listened to as a kid  brought me to a special place that evening.

Oh yes, and that's great! He just needs to rearrange the songs and adjust them so that  listeners do not feel uncomfortable and fear if he's going to make it to the end of the song. He, and many other icons, do have the charisma and touch to impress us without the highest notes.

I'm thinking Macca came from the English tabloid press, but I don't know for sure.

Just doing a sanity check here, this performance from Sir Paul wasn't part of a commercial concert tour it was an item in the Olympic opening ceremony which was depicting highlights of  British culture, what better way of depicting that part of it than by using the original article?

I still don't understand why he is expected to pull of a performance worthy of his heyday given the circumstances.

What's wrong with Grandpappy turning up and doing his party piece?   He's certainly earned a place in the heritage that was being celebrated.  It was a sing-a-long to herald in a bloody great party not an attempt to win the next Grammy.

He passed the baton on years ago.

In 100 years from now "they" will be studying Paul McCartney (and the Beatles) in music history books and at Berkeley in Boston... Julliard ....ect  just like they do Mozart and Bach

When Beethoven was on his 9th symphony and deaf and everyone was saying he "lost it" I would have been front row cuz its freakin Beethoven!!!

Leo Sayer will be lucky to get a side note in a music history or theory book 100 years from now... but the Beatles will still be studied and analyzed and compared and ridiculed ...discussed...ect...

Paul had a rough start to hey jude at the olympics 2012 - he was obvious choked up at the start of the song from the ceremony ...

however ....

yes - his voice is raspy - even in interviews hes squeaks and has a raspy voice - he's freaking  70 years old

helter skelter alone in one take would have blown out my voice 40 years ago

 - hes still impressive

screw leo sayer -

this is paul freakin mccartney

COME ON!

WTF LEO!!

Ya I know..... He's HAD 2 wives and now HAS current one ...and he's only paying money to ONE of them

If he's still paying Linda then I'd say he'd be sucking monk berry moon delight to be him  since Linda has died.....and his current wife is all ready a millionaire and he has no court order to pay any money to her .....

That leaves ONE that he actually has a payment to  ....Heather Mills ...

Icons, yes, but to remain an icon and avoid becoming a target of "understanding" nods requires a timely retirement or a change of style. The artist needs to be able to change with his increasing limitations. That way he maintains dignity and true appreciation.

Well put..................

I personally hate watching or  any artist past their prime..........................

Unless ,  they  appear to have an understanding of where they are now in there lives or careers, and appear to have made honest adjustments  that are almost acknowledgments of their current skills.

That all being said, When its time to hang it up ,its time to hang it up.........

 Sad but True......................

Bah. I'll play for as long as I am physically capable to do so. I wouldn't even care if I sucked. I play music for me first. Every one else second. A guy like McCartney's entire life has revolved around music. If he stopped he'd probably just die. Never give up!
