OldTimerNewComer I suspect this is a very, very old but un-addressed bug. Shot in the dark, but try it. Check the option under Preferences\Display: Show midi activity on the windows taskbar If it is checked, uncheck it. Recreate a hang condition. Kill Sonar.exe in the task manager. If Sonar.exe quits, that's your problem Sonar IS trying to exit but being hung by the midi driver process/icon in the taskbar. I have checked to make sure this option is off since Sonar 3 Producer. Like I said, shot in the dark, don't shoot me if I'm wrong. Mel
Hi Mel - that's interesting. I have just shutoff this option in SONAR and will test it out. I rarely get crashes (good thing right?), and am not inclined to force the issue. When I do get a crash, inevitably due to a shady 32 bit plug, I have to wait for the Midi activity icon to clear before I can delete SPlat from the Task Manager. I had always assumed this was my M-Audio driver holding on to the port for a period of time following the crash - never occurred to me that it could simply be the status monitoring/icon on the SONAR end. Thanks.

I haven't had this issue for a while... I just assumed it was because I had this option off. EDIT: I remember being fed up with this issue and, after some digging, I THINK the answer I came up with was that ALONG WITH the midi monitor icon disabled the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth has to be disabled as well in midi preferences... you may even(if you are brave) find the associated dll and rename it so Sonar doesn't see it. I am almost certain that the MS Synth is the hanging device. Worth a try. Mel

markyzno Well, that took me 3 minutes to get Sonar to crash. All I did was browse 3 drum loops from Dimension Pro x64 then bingo, crash.
Hi markyzno; perhaps you could try it again to test with icon/synth disabled? there is another thread with the exact steps you mention with a confirmed error report regarding a problem with Dim Pro loops. Mel

From the MS Community forum... "Step 1: Disable Exclusive Mode. This eliminates the problem of Microsoft GS Wavetable synth not being able to use the same drivers simultaneously.
a. Open Control panel b. Select Sound. c. Double click on Speakers d. Click on Advanced tab. e. Disable Exclusive mode. Step 2: Disable Exclusive mode in all play back devices. a. Open Control panel b. Select Sound. c. Select Manage Audio devices. d. Right click on any of the playback devices and go to properties e. Under Advanced tab, disable everything in exclusive mode f. Repeat this for all devices under "Playback" tab.
I don't remember when I did this, so long ago(Sonar 3P),but it is now a regular part of my setup as I use more than one interfaceoccasionally and it minimizes conflicts with the OS. Mel

That doesn't always work konradh... sometimes it wont stop at all. Restart has been my way of fixing the problem.
I will look into some of the other suggestions here.

That was the whole point of my rant (many a moon ago now I hasten to add) - the .exe sits there and wont close the process. Thanks Mel, i'll try this and report back, although like I say...I havent had this issue since Platinum.

I seem to recall some folks had success by either unplugging/plugging their audio interface or powering it off and on. It seems to interrupt what is hanging and frees up Sonar from running. Bob Bone

This definitely suggests a midi driver hang. The indication is that SONAR is exiting memory CORRECTLY, but the midi driver is hanging SONAR. I have seen posts on another site relating to this issue stating that sonar quit as soon as MIDI CABLE IN is disconnected. Mel
