So, Spandau Ballet will not go over well in Oklahoma?

It might, depending on "the audience". Will that be in a chicken wire bar?

I swear that if I see one more cover band play Roadhouse Blues or the female equivalent, Bobby McGee, I'm going to grab all the beer bottles I can reach and start hurling them at the band.

There's some good choices listed here but these two IMO should be laid to rest.

Bobby McGee - totally.

Roadhouse Blues - I was lucky enough not to be exposed to it all that much. We did cover it a few times back in the early 90s, and I've heard one Doors tribute band play it, but I guess I was lucky enough to be spared.

In many cases, I wouldn't blame the bands playing them though, but the audience.

I remember when I started working as a DJ and Nine Inch Nails' Closer became a hit (at which time I had already heard it too often) - people (mostly girls actually) asked for that song practically every night I was working (6 nights a week) for well over a years. Sometimes I'd have to play it twice a night.

As much as I like John Paul Jones, I'm betting that you dig this one because of the guitar. ;)

Amazing song and lots of fun to play. Never had the chance to play it live though.

Yes, it's a guitar player dream that I love to ruin every so often. I find the only way to manage it is to have a guitar all tuned up and sitting there for this one song. It's way easier if the worst player (me) does the nice open tuning bits while the gun slinger comes in to do the lead stuff.

Correct Ol' pal. You will notice I said that I ruin it. In other words, I "want" to play them but my personal abilities often fall short. Now if it was our pal Danny D., he'd actually be talking about doing it right.

That's one of the reasons I enjoyed doing The Tea Party covers so much. In order to keep up in between their alternate tunings and the ones I used in my/our songs, I had to borrow a couple guitars and use them on stage, each one tuned for a specific song or two. That plus the violin bow as I mentioned. :P

A little OT, but...

In our 50th anniversary rendez vous our band played a medley including The Whos "Behind Blue Eyes", "Won't get fooled again" and "Summertime Blues" (the Who-version).
It was just fantastic to perform and it made the folks crazy. The quality of our performance needs no analysing, unfortunartely.

Actually, a few of us are just born smart-arses.

I read the topic title as "Cover songs a band should play" not necessarily what they want to play. Dream Theater's A Change Of Seasons is a great example of many songs I'd like to cover (for those that aren't familiar with this album, after one original song, DT covers a few songs then finishes with a large melody of several covers blended together).

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Cover tunes should depend on what region you're in for the gig. What's your audience, what do they like. It takes some investigation. Especially nowadays. Most anyone will like a huge classic, anywhere. But, making friends, is something a bit different.

Yeah ... Not sure you should play Hotel California at the Red Lion in Pendleton, Oregon! Your cover band will be out the door an hour later! But if you play Friends in the right high places, everyone will sing with you!

That's one type of band I would NEVER be on, btw, even if I was starving!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Hi,

The stuff I WOULD play ... and I don't care if my audience was only 1 person, and maybe a cassette player ... is:

You either standup for your work, or you go home ... and I would rather go home empty handed ... than not give myself a chance! You can not prove to anyone in this world that you play Am better than Bapu, besides the fact that 90% of the audience has no idea what Am is ... other than ... it sounds pretty and nice and he did that so neatly!

The few covers I would ever consider: (I get to play the bass, since Bapu can't and is too busy!)

Terje Rypdal - Adagietto  (my David Darling impression)
Egberto Gismonti - Ballerina  (my Charlie Haden impression)
Jan Garbarek - Soria Maria  (my Eberhard Weber impression)
Can - Mother Sky  (my Holger Czukay impression)
Carmen - Bullerias (my John Glascock impression)
Stanley Clark/RTF (one piece for sure)
Funkadelics - Maggot Brain
...
and to drive you out of your tree and off the dance floor ...
Garry Moore -- Spirit (from Stepping Stone!)
...  and then one last song ...
A Way Out - Peter Hammill
And I guarantee you that you will remember the show, because the film, the girls and everything else is gonna have people go ... wow ... what was that? ... by the time you get seen by a few people ... they will remember you. Playing in that bar ... no one cares, or gives a ****, and you are a slave to the drunken whims of an audfience!

Not my style!
