I am one of the lucky ones... both house and boat are fine.. was without power for 4hrs yesterday but despite hearing transsformers pop all evening I am in good shape.. With gusts to 95mph (reported at weather station 2 miles away) the damage is as expected with some seriously large trees down and the surge had all of downtown mystic flooded from 9pm last night... quite the sight.. phew

7 million without power is what I heard this morning. May be awhile before hearing from anyone on the East Coast then.

I have 2 nieces living in NJ, in the southern part of the state....one lives in Egg Harbor which is only a few miles from Atlantic City. She is pretty much right where it came in. Fortunately, if one can say that, it was only a Cat 1 storm. I shutter to think of the damage we would be looking at this morning if it had been any stronger. (one hour of elapsed time making calls) I was able to contact one of my nieces and she said everything was fine.... They had minimal damage, no flooding and power was on. She is the one who lives near Egg Harbor....

Here's hoping that all our regulars are safe and well if having to endure damage, flooding and power loss. Condolences to the families in the US and elsewhere that have lost loved ones to this horrific storm.

We got off very lucky here. The hurricane hit with pounding rain and wind gusts approaching 80 mph, but our power stayed on, although it's still out three miles from here. At around 3:30 am I saw the freakiest thing. Green lightning flashes lit up the entire sky like night vision. I know it wasn't transformers arcing because the entire sky was flashing green above the cloud cover. Weird stuff, hope everyone else is safe and hanging in there! Bob

The Bounty was sunk off the coast of North Carolina yesterday. It was the ship built for the Brando flick. They were trying to sail her to Florida, lost power and foundered. Most of the crew abandoned ship and were rescued, but the fate of the captain is unknown. The only known death was a woman, a descendant of Fletcher Christian.

They were bringing it down to it's semi permanent dock across the street from the block my Mother in Law lives on. It was an institution... I was a tourist kid on board it 40+ years ago... and now it's gone. The crew should have had a mutiny and taken that boat in to safe harbor a week ago when this storm was forecast. It's good news that most of the crew survived... it must have been scary for both the crew and the rescue detail. Bummer. best regards, mike

We lost power Mon afternoon and got it back last night. No cell service either since the towers had no power. Some of my friends still have no power while a few blocks away it's back on. Driving to get close to a working tower is still an iffy errand since so many gas stations are out of gas and/or power and you never know if the next curve in the road will have a downed tree/power line. We lose power with most heavy storms here, but I can't remember the last time cell service went out, too. No fun being so totally cut off from the outside world. My heart goes out to those who lost way more than power. -Susan
