Mooch is right.

Bapu is wrong.

HTH.

p.s. it's a great sound to aim for.

I've been trying to re-create my 70s sound with sample sets it is very difficult.  Every library I go through they are tuned wrong and have the snare tensioned so it is almost choking the drum in nearly every case.  I can't name one set of samples or drum sampler that gets rim shots right.  It's pretty sad really when you think of how much stuff is out there.

I just got my trusty old snare drum down from the loft and I'm currently sampling that to try and get what I want.  I figured that just making singular hits doesn't sound right so I'm getting in the groove playing air drums with one hand and hitting the snare with the other.  It looks pretty mad when I do it but the sounds are much better than just trying to make singular deliberate hits.

It's a painstaking process though comparing for volume and hit quality in order to make a useable set.  I'm just using a dynamic mic for the close position and have a condenser about 8ft away to get a bit of 'room'.

Wow Jon

That's a feat .... Trying to sample my own drums with all those types of hits is unimaginable .... Too much for my brain

If you get a whole song done  using your own samples from your own kit .. I'd like to hear it

And tell Bapu to ease up on compression ... It ruins everything ... Use it sparingly ... Like a dime .. Go on now ... U tell him that

Oh and +1 on mooch is right

Number one ..... You can hear it when it squashed and sounds small

Number two ...   Tape saturation is compression emulation the way a tape deck is suppose to compress naturally to tape from the heads ... But it's really just another type of compressor in the digital world ...

Number 3 .... Ive never heard a good digital tape emulator in digital format yet

On a side note ... Cakewalk was pretty slick with the console emulator .. Making a graphic of an emulator that you can't hear but if you think about it hard enough you get fooled as to there is an emulation  going on ..... How sweet is that ?

Pretty slick Cakewalk people

I am sorry your ear buds or headphones .. Or monitors .... Or book case speakers don't pick up on this .... That's your problem .....

Mmmmmkay ?

Number 4 .... I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure there is no need (or a product) to emulate digital tape. I believe that is what a DAW is already, no?

Just figure out how Metallica did the drums on St. Anger and do the opposite.
