Dean, you can swap out and use the compressors in either spot. The differences in "name" are irrelevant. The question is how hard and fast do you want the compressors to react... to input, to output, how much of the transient is allowed through, how much of the tail end of the transient is amplified before the compressor releases back to normal. For me the SSL is subtle, I feel like I have to really push the sound through to make a harsh effect. I feel like the 1176 can bring forward a lot of energy with very little push. I'm doing an acoustic recording project with a bluegrass band. The 1176 changes the energy on the track level. Each of the two guitars are panned hard left or right. I have them routed to a GTR Buss. The PC4k S-type channel comp levels the summed sound so that even though each guitar has it's own nuance, they both lay in the song at approximately the same level... or they sound as though they are on the same stage without one overpowering the other.
