For killer prices and great service, you can't beat newegg.com for buying PC components IMO. Have you considered buying the components and having a friend help you put it together? You'll save big $ and end up with a PC you're likely to be much happier with than if you buy a big-brand PC.

My advice (FWIW): Spec out your components and list them here. Lots of very knowlegeable people will tell you if you're about to run into compatibilty problems. They can also give advice on which components are most suitable for audio use and what will give you the most bang for your buck. I was looking at building a Dual-Xeon machine but decided to go Opteron based on the advice I got from the smart people here, and I couldn't be more stoked that I did!

And AMD rocks! I'm on my fourth dedicated music PC and two of them have been AMD (a K62 and now a Dual-Opteron screamer). The two Intels worked well too, but I haven't had any CPU or motherboard-related issues with my AMD boxes. You'll save even more bux going the AMD route and get better performance to boot.

Thanks also to _roll_n_rock for the link to ecollagepc.com. There prices seem to be the best.

You are welcome.

I know many people that have ordered from them and have had great service.

One guy I work with complained to them about the case he ordered. It did not have two fans like he expected and they actually sent him another fan to make him happy. I thought that was good of them.

The same set up with an athlon64 3200 and a Kn8 motherboard. $850 us

If it's only 150 bucks diff (& you can afford that), Dave's idea's the way to go - herds of deliriously happy people out there with new 64-based systems.

The only caveat (& this applies to all systems) is your choice of graphics card, some of which can interfere remarkably well with the PCI buss & hence, your soundcard.

Good luck, Frank - sounds as if you're on the right track.

If you know where to look, you can find some really dirt-cheap prices. Try www.pricewatch.com. From there, I built this for $250:

Athlon XP 2400+
256 MB DDR RAM
40 GB IDE system drive
160 GB IDE audio drive
Gainward GeForce4 MX440 Video Card
Rackmount 'server' case w/400 watt psu

My delta 1010 cost me almost 2x my computer!

well I did shop around and buy from different sources.. however w/some places you get free shipping if you buy 2 items or w/e, so I compared the extra cost of a component w/free shipping to the cheaper price somewhere else w/o free shipping, and just went from there.

Yea. I used www.pricewatch.com to compare retailers. All the prices shown on the site include shipping, which is great, and if you have a bad experience with a certain site, you can report it to pricewatch, which lowers their 'feedback.' This site will get you some amazing deals.

Have fun

Hey Guys,me again.Got another question.I keep seeing the terms "OEM" and "retail",along with a corresponding price difference on some things while shopping. What's that mean?

I seemed to have shopped this athlon 64 system down to approx $750,which is the high end of my budget.I guess the guitar will have to wait.

Case w/400w psu
Giga k8ns pro mobo
athlon 64 3200
2x 512mb corsair value select ram
Seagate 80 & 160 gb hard drives
cd/rw drive

Any comments or critiques please chime in

"OEM" and "retail"

Original Equipment Manufacturer gear usually comes on its own in an anti-static bag; no manual, no box, etc. Retail you get the whole kit. OEM's the way to go for me as it's cheaper & the manual & drivers (if needed) are usually available online.

shopped this athlon 64 system down to approx $750

Go the Athlon64 if you want a high-speed, gazillion-track future-proof system. Go the XP if you care more about the guitar and less about power... you may not even notice the lack of grunt !

I say go with retail for your CPU. Retail CPUs only cost a few dollars more and come with a heatsink and fan. The rest is up to you. I only buy OEM hard drives. Most motherboards are only available as retail. Retail boxes often come with niciteies like cables, screws, etc...

Asus a7n8x-e deluxe

this is a good board BUT if you plan to use the on-board SATA controller
keep in mind that lots of people had reported difficult to resolve
popping & cracking problems.

you should be ok using ide though

Thanks for all the info guys. It's all been a huge help.

I would like to pose a question to all of you that are using athlon xp set ups.( for that matter, anyone else who wants to chime in, too)I know that there isn't an exact answer to this due to all of the variables, and it probably is a dumb question, but maybe you guys can give me a rough idea of what kind of track counts you are getting with your rigs.I'm planning to use Reason for my soundfont drums, maybe bass, piano, and a couple string/synth tracks, along with maybe 10 tracks or so of audio.I record at 44.1khz-24bit.

- and-

How much of an advantage is using sata drives(with a compatible mobo) over ide drives?

Man,I sure have a boat load of questions!I'm probably becoming a pain in the butt. Thanks to all who have responded for your patience.

That would be no problem on my rig. Motherboard: the classic A7N8X-Deluxe...~$60 CPU: AthlonXP 2700+ (256k cache, 333MHz FSB, 2.16GHz)...~$74

How much of an advantage is using sata drives(with a compatible mobo) over ide drives?

None, really. The sustained transfer rate of a hard drive is still much lower than the bandwidth available already, so raising the peak bandwidth from 100 or 133 to 150MB/s affects very little apart from short cache bursts from the drive. A large cache drive will improve slightly with the extra bandwidth, and the cables are small and therfore extra spiffy.

Sure thing Rolo-

One of my favorites is www.BZBOYZ.com. Here is a link to an Athlon 64 w/Motherboard for $206 or so.

One of my favorites for memory is www.ms4me.com. I just bought this- 512 MB of Elixer PC2700 DDR Ram for $73.

Another great place for cables is www.cable123.com.

Great place for fans- www.nexfan.com

These are just a few- I'll put up some more when I find the time.
