5. All grounds just ganged inside the boxes.

Not sure what the problem is on this one.  Is it that the grounds aren't connected to the switches themselves?  Apart from that, this is how I've connected unshielded ground wires in a wall switch configuration.  Am I doing something bad?

One time I was called in to a day care center to replace a fire sprinkler system. The previous contractor had glued sprinkler heads to the ceiling without any connections to a water supply.  I swear I'm not lying it was soooo true and soooo outrageous !!! This really actually happened....

Damn... just now called?

Fire is supposed to be the #1 priority signal.. it goes to the head of the line. The maximum permitted time between the activation at the site, and the fire dept getting the fire call to respond is 90 seconds MAXIMUM.  Longer than that is a FAIL.   I would inquire as to the central station.... and change if they give an excuse that does not seem reasonable. Either they should have contacted someone at the house or send the FD to visit you.

Wait... you said push clip and you removed it and the system started to beep.....OK that is circuit supervision..... the lowest priority signal. It is not an alarm,,,, but a notification that the circuit is not functional.... you pulled the smoke head off the base.  There's a small hole (very likely) on the smoke detector.... if you stick a thin screwdriver in there and push THAT will trip the alarm and THAT should result in a phone call in a few seconds. I suggest if you wish to test that to FIRST call and put your system in test. If the central station has been instructed to dispatch first on fire, the FD will show up and they will NOT be happy that you were simply testing, and depending on the town, and the FD's policy, they may actually send you a bill for several hundred to several thousand dollars for a false alarm response. Seriously....!!!!

In a house they are allowed to call the house before dispatching the FD. But 1 hour is just wrong. the house could be burned to the ground in 60 minutes. At that point...why bother?

The panel has a battery. It will last 3 to 4 years, sometimes longer, but they do go dead. Batteries Plus sells the replacements and if you have the key to the panel you can easily replace it yourself and not pay a service call..... the thing above the cupboards with antennas is probably the radio receiver for the wireless door, window, and motion detectors. Not likely a cell backup.

Hardwire smokes do not have a battery if it is part of the security system. there are wireless smokes and they do have batts.  If you have 120v smokes in the house they may have batts in them.

On that church fire system... I am finding even more stuff that needs fixing as I work on it.... it seems now that all 3 of the power supplies for the bells and strobes are defective.

Oh well.....

Cool Danny, I bet the forensic audio work is the most interesting of all. Being forensic, do you get called into court to testify about the original recordings, what you did, what makes you an expert... all the dirty tricks a good defense attorney will trow at you to try to discredit you and your work? I realize they are just doing their job but I've known people who are experts who wanted to crawl up in a fetal position under crosss. I bet, if you ever have to go... you do fine.

Interesting!!

J

It's definitely interesting. I'm by far *NOT* an expert....my job is only to isolate what is going on without tampering with the evidence. So far there hasn't been a need for me to appear in court. Quick example...

They have a snitch wired up doing a drug deal. The dude gets scared about where the wire is placed. He decides to move it to his watch pocket. He has club foot on that side. Every time he walks, you hear thhummmmmpup......thhummmmpup. This sort of goes on while the conversation is taking place with a drug dealer because they are walking while talking. So I remove the dragging foot sound. Or sometimes something on the street is happening during conversation.....a fire engine rolls by or a jet plane flys on by. They always have the before and after to see that nothing was tampered with on our end. We just make the audio as audible as possible while removing anything distracting from that whenever we can. Sometimes there's only so much you can do.

The greatest thing about it J, is some of the dialogue. It's pure comedy man. I've been an Ebonics major since 10th grade....the stuff I learn from some of these guys and gals is absolutely priceless in my skit when I pull out my "hood talk". Of course lots of it is quite sad due to the nature of the whole thing. The realization hits you that it's not TV....there's real hits going out on people, loads of drugs being sold, children carrying the drugs....that part, no comedy at all. It makes your heart sink and can actually make you tear up in an instant. I try not to pay attention to it and just remove what I'm supposed to remove, and make the phrases come out more clearly.

Herb, it wasn't the smoke detector it was another thing with something like a little glass thingy, almost looks like a resistor. I think it is a heat sensor. It is near the smoke detector. I didn't see a battery in it but then I didn't take time to look because the system started a fast beeping. The little button on the side was aa release I think. I'm aware of the test button on the SD.

They said they got the notice at 12:23 and called at 12:24. That is what was eird, they always call right away on everything.

I'll get Tim out here. It is Eagle Systems. Not sure what is going on but I will find out and I will let you know.

Thanks for the info!

I wish you could post a clip sometime but I'm sure you can't... I bet they are funny until you hear someone get popped.

Haha, yeah I wish I could too...you know, the funny parts. Had one a few weeks back where this chick comes out of nowhere...walking down the street and she says "yeah girl, he did me soo good, he made my toes curl!" LOL! :)

Huge typo in my last post...meant to say I'm by far NOT an expert....forgot the "not" and added it in just now. I just listen and make it as clear as I can. Sometimes the more clear it is, the more it makes the hair on your arms stand though because it's real.
