Hi Frank,

Excellend musicianship all around!  Really nice solos and chord progressions.  There is so much good in the music I think a quick remix would help.

The sax is loud here at work on my Dell USB speakers but the tone of the instruments is right on.

I enjoyed it.

Probably a bit too smooth and innofensive sounding for my personal listening taste, but i can definitely appreciate your amazing skill in both playing and recording Frank.

Thanks for the help with the mix... I took your advice, and lowered the Sax volume on this latest mix... TimBo thought it was too loud as well...  I also made significant changes to the drums... whatcha think..?

I like this tune. It has a Steely Dan vibe with some of that other 70s influences going on. Great Jam.

I think the sax could come down 1db more.

The song after is quite nice as well.

Great playing all around.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

1deebee ??

How many times?

More.....................................

Many 1 deebees more.

maybe 6 or 7 of them deebees.

kinda like your track is your favorite cozy lounge chair. The sax is sittin up on the arm. Not in the seat..

I've been accused of many things over the years... but to imply that my music is "smooth and inoffensive"... well... that just hurts...
I'll show ya'... I'll go ahead and cover that Barry Manilow tune I've been contemplating...

Notnot,

Much better with sax down.  I would bring it down 1.5 db more!  Not kidding but it doesn't matter.   I like the song, feel, and playing.  Sounds good over here.  I wish I could play guitar like you.

Smooth ..
Sax is a lovely instrument (used in the right way) ...
Was just thinking yesterday how i love a subtle harmonica (was thinking of a del amitri song), and how its not so often the instrument of choice these days ...   I think i heard a nice subtle harmonica in there ...
Enjoyed it ..  Thanks

Rimshot... Thanks for the advice... I really appreciate the helpful feedback...

Guitarpima... thanks for listening, and glad you liked... sorry if I offended you before... no more ideological arguments from me, here... I really do like comparisons to The Dan, better than that other man...

Tim... all kidding aside, I really value your ears and advice... I do hope you have something plugged into that little speaker jack on your MacBook...
I did lower the sax volume a bit more on the SoundCloud mix... Thanks again

What sax? I cant hear it - might be deaf or so - like the song and it could pass as a medium song on the album.

Re:Never Was 2013/02/15 15:34:35 (permalink)
well, thanks Frank. And I value you/yours.

Ok, I'll put on my serious face now. Wait, um, er, ouch, ahhhhhhh, ugh, ...,,,.,,..,,,.... OK. Ready..

I think it sounds much more in the sound pocket now as I can hear the rest of the track peaking in and out around the sax.
I still think it's a little loud actually though. How much have you come down since the first posting?

Ya know, people tell me all the time to turn up my lead instruments so maybe it's just an odd way that I hear things. But, I like to hear everything as ONE sort of. It's the listener's job to pull out of a mix what they want to.
er, sumethin like that.

And yes, still on the MacBook. I've found that if it isn't right on the Mac, it isn't right. It's my lowest common denominator I guess.

I also noticed some level variations in the sax that sounded more like the player was moving around too much or something. He is a pretty great player BTW. Must be fun workin it..

Anyway that's all nittpicking to a point I guess. It's all wonderful.
You can send me a track mix and the sax and I'll show you what I'd hear If'n you want.

Thanks Frank..

The hi-hat seems to really stand out to me. May be appropriate for this kind of music though. Kind of a personal preference thing.

Some of it doesn't melt together for me, but again it's a PP thing. (Bapu is laughing right now).

For example, the guitar solo toward the end has a touch more bottom end than I would have there ... but it's all personal preference stuff.

It's a good tune no doubt. :)

Thanks for the feedback and the help earlier Brian...

Thanks for that Eco, but you may have listened to the wrong tune... The sax is on the second song... "Never Was"

Thanks again Tim... I think I lowerd the sax maybe 2.4 dB altogether from the first mix... please do me a favor, and plug in some earbuds or phones and let me know how it sounds then... I just can't imagine anything sounding right from built in laptop speakers...

Thanks a lot Bub... I'm hip to the HH... it is a pp...
but I do agree, it may be a bit too loud... I didn't notice the guitar solo thingy... I'll check that out... Thanks for the good ears...

I think I have a couple different chords in that song, but your mix sounds fine. Not sure, my hearing seems to be a half-step off anymore (or a whole step). Funny though, I did not do mine to use your chords, but I heard some versions that really are bad. (I came up with my own chords though). I remember that version also, and the mix sounds fine to me. (mine is just to night club-ish I guess so far, for older folks like me I guess perhaps. Well, ya, I have to fool around with it also even if it amounts to nothing - vocal version like all the other versions up). As to putting it on an album I guess that would still be up to you....................!

And that's saying something, there are many extremely talented people here.
