I might be quite wrong about this but I think many companies now are preferring youtube videos to old-timey user manuals.

Look at how the price of DAWs has crashed in the last 5-6 years. They don't have the money to write out a new manual for every new version, and then bind that new manual with cool new graphics etc.

What is needed is a Sonar fanatic who is unemplyed and who wants to do the job him/herself for free. Otherwise I think the printed material will only get worse/more out of date.

I do have the manual for both Rapture and Zeta, but Dimension only seems to include the help file - which is useless on Mac.

Simon Cann's book is a great read though. Worth every penny.

I have a similiar problem trying to open the Vintage channel manual. It is located in the correct folder but I can't access it from within the gui.

Yeah, I have had inconsistent results using F1 to bring up plugin specific help files in X1/X2. I don't know if it is SONAR or Win7 related. In my case both SONAR and OS changed at the same time.

PDFs have to be opened using a reader like Acrobat. Sadly most vsti manuals need to be opened manual-y.

I was referring to plugins with chm files like PapaBear's example.

So was I. I get the same results (or lack of) as he does.

He also mentioned the Rapture PDF, thus my response.

The chm's not opening might be due to my laptop's fn key limitation, but I don't know that for sure.

F1 opens my HP Help only.

fn + F1 does nothing while a vsti is in focus.

It would help tremendously if vsti's included a Help Button.

I can get the plugin specific chm (including DimPro and Rapture) files on my desktop to open sometimes with F1. It is inconsistent as if the path to the file gets lost somehow. On my old XP desktop the F1 key brought up the plugin chm files every time but that machine never ran the SONAR X series.

I couldn't find the doc either.

I did find this: http://www.rolandce.com/m...e%20User's%20Guide.pdf

Also there is a good video course available from Cakewalk for like $5 and its well worth it if you don't mind the guy's Scottish accent.

I just went looking for the manual, and the OP is right. There is none.

But ... I did discover that there are 2 free expansion packs for it.

That's a bit of good news, ain't it?

And there's also the free Muz3um expansion pack also, not from Cakewalk. Full of vintage synth sounds.

If I double click a .chm file in my win7 it opens just fine. I haven't downloaded anything.

I send an email to tech support some months ago asking the same question about the DimPro help, saying, as you did, that I had the file, but couldn't get it open with the F1 key.  They sent back a nonresponsive response pointing me to where I could download the help file, which I had told them was already on my computer.  I gave up at that point, and just put a shortcut to it on my desktop for when I need it.

About Rapture - F1 wasn't working for it, either.  And there was no .chm file in the Rapture documentation folder.  But I found a Rapture LE help file in the Rapture LE documentation folder.  I opened it and saw that it said that the help file for both LE and full Rapture are the same.  So I copied it to the full Rapture documentation folder, removed the "_LE" from the file name, and lo and behold, that did the trick.  It now opens with the F1 key from inside Rapture.

F1 doesn't work for Z3TA +2 either, and I don't think I ever found a help file for it.  But, under "Options", you can click on a link to the user manual pdf, which does work.

For the rest of the plugin synths, it seems hit-or-miss.

All this is with Win 7 (x64) and X2 with the quick fix but not the A patch.

Universal 120 Manual

Not a "plug".  But I do think that Chad did a great job of illustrating some of Rapture's newer features from the point revisions.  This is something that you won't find in the manual or help file (although the features are touched on at the Cakewalk update pages).

Thanks for your comments, wr. I had similar experiences with Cakewalk Tech Support: never received any solution from them. I am not a programmer, but I thought that making a program to see and open a .chm or any other file when pressing F1 should not be such a big deal; unfortunately it looks like it is, at least for the people who built Dimension Pro and Rapture. In my case, these two programs didn't even install the .chm files; I had to obtain them afterwards. So, I ended up by making a folder where I collected all kind of help files (.chm, .pdf, etc.) for plugins. You open Windows/File Explorer, open Plugins Documentation folder, open Dimension Pro Help folder, click on Dimension.chm and, voila: after only four clicks you get Help! Or, you put shortcuts on the desktop: if you have 30 plugins you have to place only 30 shortcuts and you're done.  Or, as someone suggested, you can discover how the program works by guessing and/or playing with knobs. Nice and elegant.

The truth is that I really miss those primitive printed manuals.

+1 for the printed manuals.

I've put all my help files, pdf's,etc. in a Windows Task Bar toolbar so I can get at them at any time with a couple of clicks.

With a bit of work you can get the toolbar(s) centered in the Task Bar which is very useful on a wide screen.

And another thing (since I got started about Help files)...

If you go to the online Help for X2, there is a listing of all the plugins, with a brief description.  Every single description ends with this sentence "For more information, see the (plugin name) online Help".

It would be nice if online Help existed for all of those plugins, but it doesn't, not that I can find.  Of course, since there's no reliable way to access Help from within the plugins, who knows?  It would be nice, too, if there were links given in that listing, along with the suggestion to see the online Help.

Some time ago I left feedback about this on that page of the plugins list, but as far as I can tell, nothing has changed.

Yes, they should make them available for a fee to those who want them. I'm fine with the soft copy especially if it helps keep the cost down and saves trees.
