COOL VIBE THERE WOOKIE..

i like the blondie meets Missing Persons vibe in it...

i have to say the mix is a bit washed out....

but the whole thing, performances, arrangement, everything, is there.
it needs some serious polishing on the mix...

that said, the mix still works just fine...
if the voice is the primary element (which it is....) then it's hard to argue that it can't stay just like it is.

there's some cool driving drum rhythms in there, that are pretty much washed out...

i'm not sure how I would approach this mix, if it was mine to mix...

this is a tricky mix.

you've got a solid wall of instruments to deal with... plus a vocal that is flat (in terms of DYNAMICS only)... meaning, everything is the same volume all the way across, and all you really have left, is panning, carving EQ, and some judicious fader riding to bring certain things up and down, while letting the vocal always sit on top..

i dig the song.
i think you can mix it better.
be aggressive, see what happens.

What a trip. Yeah, definitely space grunge, cool vocal that grew on me as the track progressed. Subtle melodies there. Were the drums meant to be so mechanically flat? I wasn't sure, I could understand the effect, but the percussion seemed a little overshadowed, to me anyway. Very cool song.

Very good song. Enjoyed the listen. Although I agree with the above posters about the muddiness. Instruments do sound distinct enough.

I must have missed the first mix, most likely because I was away for quite awhile, but this has a very unique kind of atmosphere to it. It isn't crisp and clean, but then it doesn't have to be. I think it sounds really  good and its uniqueness helps it to stand out alone. Nicely done and the vocals fit the instrumentation well.

Peace be with you. Blessings, John

Cool tuneage and nice work by both of you. I agree with Gpnz on the drums. They should be more prominent and clear.

Yea, the longer I listened to this the more I liked the vibe over modern aesthetics.  I could almost here the scratches in the vinyl.  I mean, you could go for a more open mix and pop the vocals, but then it would lose the charm.  Really like the bass synth runs - outstanding.

I liked the song.  Even my wife from the living room popped up w/ "Who is that?" in a good way.

Well, if I did not like you and Jules as much as I do, you might think I was just being vindictive over something, but that is not the case. I am not going to blow smoke up your arse John. Jules vocals are in need of a lot of work. They are dynamically flat, somewhat pitchy, and in dire need of depth. I would try a variety of things starting with a chorus filter, or maybe a harmonizer, or some convolution reverb to see what works. The overall mix is too strong in what sounds like the 200-400hz range, and too weak in the 2 to 8khz range. You have width but little depth. What this reminds me of is one of my Mike Oldfield "best of" albums that remastered a lot of his work, and muddied the mix considerably.

Sounds great to me but the music sounds somewhat muddy in the mix unless you intended it to be that way .
Overlooking that I think you both did a great job !

wookie-
the new mix:

it translates better REALLY LOUD

but it doesn't translate well at low volume.

i don't know if it's a mastering issue...
or just simple mix choices....

i actually think the first mix was the better of the two.

would love to help more, but honestly don't know what to offer.....
i'd have to get deeper into your mix-ology and mastering decisions, to know what to try....
don't know if you want to put that much energy into it or not...

still dig the song.
it's way cool

Thanks Gonzo I will think about that.

I hear what you are saying I have not made any sort of mastering pass this is basically the mix straight off the master buss of my 26 i/o, then into Soundforge for conversion to MP3.

The wave file does actually sound different from the MP3.  Appreciate you coming back a second time.  Perhaps when time permits we can talk thanks again for your candour.
Thanks to all who have listen to this little project.
