The default audio is not compatible with one or more sound cards

Why am i getting this? I have an octa capture and i should be able to go all the way up to 192 kHz. But i try anything above 44.4 i get this error: The default audio is not compatible with one or more sound cards. 1: I didn't have this problem before. 2: I have no other sound cards enabled. The on board card is disabled in the bios. 3: When i did have it enabled before it still wasn't a problem. Thanks.

AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core, 8 gig ram, SSD, Windows 7 - 64 bit, Sonar Producer X2, Octa Capture.

What driver mode are you using? Try ASIO or WDM.

    I'm using ASIO.

What if you switch to WDM? I'm not sure why it's not working with ASIO, but switching to WDM may get you around the problem for now, while you try to figure out the problem.

For whatever the worth, anytime you change sample rates, somewhere in an older post I recall that Cakewalk advised in that thread to disconnect/reconnect the audio interface - if you haven't tried that perhaps it is worth giving a shot.

Also, is it possible you are plugged into a USB 3 port with the interface?  I had issues with my Presonus in a USB 3 port, and it worked properly when I switched back to a USB 2 port.

Also, your sample rate set for the interface must match the setting in Sonar - this may also be part of that disconnect/reconnect thing I mentioned above - even if they are set to match, perhaps unplugging and reconnecting the interface would get it all set to play nicely together.  (just grasping and hoping here).

The only other thing I saw on the specs for the octa capture was the reduction in the number of available channels when using 192.  Perhaps you have to remove the checks for unsupported channels in Sonar when you want to run at 192?  I think it dropped from 10 to 4, if I recall the specs properly, and maybe if you have all 10 checked that could cause such an error?

Hope any of the above helps,

WDM is not what i want. I tried it before but it gives me nothing but problems. Robert, i don't want to use 192. I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong. I did check the usb thing before. That didn't solve anything.

@Tripod - thanks for the additional explanation - sorry I missed the boat.

I do see it has ASIO drivers available and understand you are using ASIO.

Can you please detail your interface settings?  I believe in addition to Sample Rate that your interface may use something like 'number of samples' for buffering, (some use a different term - ASIO Buffer Size) - the functionality is essentially the same, just a different way of doing it.  Anyways, what do you have that set to, as well?

And, what is the sample rate set to in Sonar?

Also, I did not see it mentioned (that I can recall), but are these issues happening in a blank project, or for an existing one with plugins?

And just for a test, can you try the following?

    1.  With Sonar NOT running, try changing the settings for your interface to: 48khz Sample Rate, number of samples to something like 192.

    2.  Disconnect and reconnect the interface.

    3.  Fire up Sonar and make sure your interface is the selected devices in Preferences>Audio>Devices. Do NOT yet open a project.

    4.  Go to Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording, make sure ASIO is specified, and try checking the Always Open All Devices box, then click Apply.

    5.  Now go to Preferences>Audio>Device Settings and make sure your timing masters are set appropriately to your interface.  Also make sure the Sample Rate is also set to 48 khz here and click apply.

    6.  Now start a new project, with the normal template and see if you still get this message, prior to doing anything in the project.  If you do not get the error message, try inserting an audio track, selecting the audio track, importing an MP3 or WAV files, and hitting Play to see if sound is coming out.

Please try the above and post back.

    Thanks,
    Bob Bone

About the sample rate. This thread is actually a part of my main issue as described here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2810026 The latency issue if what i'm trying to solve and i have the feeling that the reason why it won't go to a higher khz has something to do with this. To find out about this i figured it's better to start a new thread dedicated to this problem as it got kinda lost in the other thread. Either way, as much as i appreciate your detailed help it didn't solve anything. If you read my other thread i have the feeling there is something wrong in the bios or motherboard. I don't see any other possibility anymore. Before i'm gonna change my motherboard i hope someone might have a solution but i doubt it. Thanks.

Tripod I saw your other thread too and got curious because I didn't see it mentioned in either one- I may have missed it- but what bit rate are setting your projects for?
