Problems opening Sonar X1 Producer.

Hello,
I am having problems opening Sonar X1 Producer. When I click on the sonar icon on the computer, the programme opens just fine, but when I close the programme down and then try and open it again, it won't open. I have to shut my computer down and then restart it everytime I want to use sonar. The programme has crashed a few times so I am thinking there might be a corrupt file somewhere. I use Windows 7, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi - we here in the forum need a bunch of information on your system specifications, and some settings and such, prior to being able to help you figure this out.

SOOOO, please review and respond to each of the following:

    1.  Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows?
    2.  Is your version of Windows up to current maintenance levels?
    3.  What precise version of X1 are you running?  (If you click on Help>About Sonar, it will open up a display window with information on the version and build number of your Sonar installation, as well as whether or not it is a 32-bit or 64-bit installed version.  You can close that window after noting the above info, which you can then post back to this thread - along with your responses to the other things I am asking for).  Please note that X1 has multiple maintenance versions, with X1d being the most current of those.
    4.  You should look in Task Manager after shutting down Sonar, and see if it is somehow still running - (it would show as SONARPDR.exe).

There are a BUNCH of past threads for this very same issue, and it would appear that many folks end up having to reboot to get it straightened out.

Anyways, here are some of the threads:

a faster remedy is to simply just log off from windows.
this will save you 5 min or so rebooting your computer.

log off from windows / log back in.
this can be achieved by using the start button or CONT / ALT / DEL then chose log off.
after a few sec you will be presented with windows password screen.

Sounds like the audio interface driver is not being released. Chuckebaby's tip is a faster workaround,

Does this happen every time you close Sonar, or just occasionally.

System specs, as requested by Bob will be a big help.

I certainly agree that logging off and back on is much faster - I saw the following snippet from fastbikerboy, from one of the thread links I posted above:

"I have seen it suggested that logging off & on again will do the same but it's never worked when I've tried it."

I meant to word my comment about appearing "that many folks end up having to reboot to get it straightened out."  This comment of mine is actually incorrect - in that I do not have substantiation for 'many folks' - it could be that many folks are, in fact, able to resolve the issue by logging off and back on.

I apologize profusely for my unsubstantiated and quite possibly incorrect comment about the number of folks having to reboot, and suggest that when the issue happens, that folks DO try chuckiebaby's approach of logging off and back on first, because as he and Glyn Barnes pointed out - if that does work it is much faster than rebooting.

Some people have posted that that they need to re-boot. Logging off has always worked for me. It could be dependent on what driver is hanging. Maybe some are written in a way that logging off does not kill the process.

While I never had this problem that frequently, it has hardly happened at all since I replaced a ESI Juli@ PCI card with a Roland Quadcapture.

With the Juli@ having another audio program open at the same time as Sonar increased the likelihood on this problem.

    +1
Just for grins and giggles, you may want to experiment with stopping the audio engine before closing Sonar.  If you have some effect sending sound (long reverb) to the device the driver may not release until the sound stops.  If this works this may just be a settings issue.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am running windows 7 64 bit and  it is up to current maintenance levels. The build number is 184. I  tried switching the audio engine off, but this has no effect and the problem still remains. It happens everytime I use sonar. Thanks for your help.

Just to verify - you stopped the audio engine by clicking on the sign-wave button in the transport control in Sonar before closing Sonar.  Is this right?  And it still hung up and needed to be rebooted?  Are you running any other programs at the same time (e.g., Guitar Rig, Amplitube)?

It is an m-audio soundcard and yes I used the transport module to switch the audio engine off. I am not running any other programmes apart from sonar. When I shut sonar down I opened the task manager and went to the processes tab and deleted the sonar.exe programme. I managed to start sonar without having to restart my computer, but when I shut sonar down, I had to go to the task manager again and delete the sonar.exe programme. I am having to do this everytime I want to start sonar after shutting it down.

Something here is forcing your audio driver to stay loaded, so X2 can't complete its shutdown.

You might want to make sure that "Play Effect Tails After Stopping" is not selected in Preferences->Playback and Recording.

Also - if you have a MIDI keyboard attached, you might want to ensure that it is not stuck sending a note to one of your synths.

Thanks for the reply. The play effects tails after stopping  is unchecked and I switched my midi keyboard off while using sonar, but the problem still remains.
