I agree but if you are desperate for extensive color control now, it is your only option.

Well I don't know the guy personally but a lot of people used his mods without issue and he seemed to have a good reputation. I don't think he'd sabotage the actual users but who knows. I'd be more concerned about altering the program in the first place and Cakewalk has warned folks to disable mods like that before reporting problems just to make sure they aren't the cause. I don't recall ever seeing any complaints about it though. Mostly praise. It could also be out of date unless he did a mod since the release of the "a" patch and his departure.

One thing that'd be cool is if there were some kind of Routing View that had a detailed graph showing what's going where in a project. I don't think I've seen anything like that so far in Sonar.

If you want extensive color control, there is a free 3rd party add-on Duckbar available at http://sonarmods.com registration is required to download

PGM, in my experience, Panu's Duckbar mod is pretty safe to use & will give you almost endless possibilities to change colors for the Sonar GUI. True, Cake doesn't officially support the mod, but there is an easy option to revert back to Sonar default for whatever reason.  It can be a bit time consuming to learn, but there are also some color templates available including 'hit you in the face' ones that are easy to apply.  Panu usually tries to keep up to date with the latest Sonar versions.  If he doesn't have the one you need, he has been known to work on the version you want.
Best,

F is collapse, shift-F would be like horizontal collapse.
