I AM CONFUSED THE CAKEWALK TOS STATES NO ADVERTISING

Advertising
Cakewalk does not allow any form of advertising, therefore promoting websites or products in the forum is inappropriate. Hyperlinks to 3rd party web sites are allowed only if they pertain directly to the discussion topic

I see Products  mentioned from forum members AND  COMPANIES( well, certain companies) promoted all the time.

Maybe what is the definition of "promoted"

a. To raise to a more important or responsible job or rank.
b. To advance (a student) to the next higher grade.

2. To contribute to the progress or growth of; further. See Synonyms at advance.
3. To urge the adoption of; advocate: promote a constitutional amendment.
4. To attempt to sell or popularize by advertising or publicity: commercials promoting a new product.
5. To help establish or organize (a new enterprise), as by securing financial backing: promote a Broadway show.

AHH number 4..
maybe then what is publicity?
1. a. Information that concerns a person, group, event, or product and that is disseminated through various media to attract public notice.
b. Public interest, notice, or notoriety achieved by the spreading of such information.
c. The act, process, or occupation of disseminating information to gain public interest.

2. The condition of being public.

hmmm seems to fit the bill...

I wonder what happens if a person were to go to said forums and publicize other products there?

I know on "UNOFFICIAL"  forums, other products ar ementioned and the mods dont ban/lock/delete the posts..

They're just blanket guidelines & rules.
I don't think it's that big a deal for a music related forum to talk about other company's products. If it were the mods would remove them, right?

It also drives a certain amount of search engine / web traffic here which helps promote Cake products as well which I'm sure they don't mind.

Just guidelines that sometimes are abused???

Its kind of like this whole mind/hive set of society today, I thought a blanket covered things, so its just a suggestion, that if I don't want to follow is OK?

Talk about is one thing, GUSH over them and constantly push them and IGNORE questions about 3 year old promises is another

.But hey FREE advertising and buzz over your  new stuff is cool , go for it, if your a company man..

Gushing is ok IF its warranted, and I suppose if you just have to have "that" product, then gush away, it floats your boat..

UPDATE :HM OK you get yourself a "partnership "and its all OK..

well Ive been schooled...I am in a small minority it seems

Ill spend my money elsewhere, not that it affects those in question, but gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside to spend elsewhere

Re: I AM CONFUSED THE CAKEWALK TOS STATES NO ADVERTISING 2013/08/09 20:43:59 (permalink)
Do we really want a forum that never announces relevant third-party products, or that discourages participation by third-party vendors? How dull would that be?

The TOS is necessarily broadly written, to cover the kitchen remodelers and fake-Nike sneaker people. In practice, if users don't complain they let it slide, and that's how it should be.

We routinely give a free pass to vendors whose products we like and use. That includes you, IK Obi. Yeh, it's sometimes borderline whether the post is really relevant to us - e.g. IKM's endless iToys campaign - and we whine loudly when that happens. But I want IK Obi to feel free to announce ST3 whenever he damn well pleases!

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

+1 to what Bit says.

I, personally,  am perfectly fine with IK Obi and IK Mulitmedia PC products/sales being announced here in our software forum. Obi has helped me out several times I was having issues getting help from IKs' support. We should be proud of the things/opportunities we have on our Cakewalk forums.

Purrrfect Audio DAW here.  Wow!...

+1 Bit.

It's seems like the whole point and existence of the Software Forum would be to announce and discuss new software that comes out. Does it really matter who announces it? I for one, would nt know about half of the new products that get released or go on sale unless I visited this area. All of the software discussed on this site directly links to my usage of Sonar.

Obi, as far as I am concerned, I am perfectly fine with the information that you bring to this site; it benefits my usage with Sonar.

Yeah looking through my list of plugins and synths, of those which I could not live without, at least half of them I would have never known about if I didn't hear about them on this forum or others. I would hazard a guess that most plugins become popular through word of mouth, and an internet forum is the ideal medium to spread the word.

I am with Bit on this one.

I do however find the "Sonar sucks, so I am now using <insert name of competitor> and its great." threads upstairs annoying. Conversely the recent Cubase 7 thread here was interesting.

Surely you mean the free upgrade to ST3 for existing owners ? ;)

As for the promotion of other related products, I have no issue with it at all in it's proper place and it would in fact be a bit weird to not be allowed to mention other products that have a valid use within Sonar.

To the OP

I would say a) this is the "software" forum so the clue could be in the name. If it was intended for a sonar product it would be given the name of that product. B) I always read that as being, it's fine for us to promote and discuss the ins and outs of third party software on here but they would draw the line at people who work for software companies coming on here to promote their products which does happen but absurdly it's usually kitchen units or other such nonsense that has no connection to, and therefore is of no interest to, folk like us.

I posted an advert on here for BFD3 but I don't work for FXpansion (beta testers notwithstanding) so it's allowed but I don't suppose cakewalk would think it ok if I was an employee.

I'm pretty sure that it is in Cake's best interest that we discuss this stuff here...rather than other sites that have nothing to do with Cakewalk...this is the best site I have ever found, I am deeply indebted to you all for sharing all this info about things I need that I didn't even know existed...I'm in debt financially as well because of you . but it is a reality that these discussions here keep us excited about music witch is surly in Cake's interest....
music is not my only thing but over the last few months I think I read every post here in the software forum, and with your help I am learning a lot,. Witch makes me more likely to upgrade next year

I see nothing wrong in alerting the forum of third party plugins that do not compete with what CW is offering. I do think there is a fine line between passing on information and promoting competing DAWs.  Being factual and truthful is no crime but being actively engaged in trying to sway people in choosing a competing DAW is wrong.

As I stated in my other thread, you are a welcomed poster here Obi...
I, for one, enjoy the discourse on ALL the varying DAW's and Plugins, etc....as long as it is civil,
and not a violation of the TOS for the forum.

Personally I have no problem with Obi or any other representatives stopping by our threads and contributing.

But I also think there's a line between providing helpful information and let's call it "overenthusiastic promotion of products", which I don't think adds much value to a discussion here. It's nice when a vendor can confirm, correct or clarify something or provide some additional information, but their opinion of how great their own products are is of zero value to me.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
