Using on screen keyboard for recording synths

Hi.  If I open a synth like Cakewalk Sound Center, a keyboard appears on my screen at the bottom of that synth.  And I can test out the different sounds by playing those virtual piano keys.  Is there a way to actually record from there onto a track?  Or do I have to set things up and then use my keyboard which is hooled in Midi to USB?

Thanks

Theoretically it should be possible. If you can set SONAR to record all sounds from soundcard, i.e. if your soundcard has "stereo mix", or maybe some MIDI Ox setting would work ... Or simply route the sound physically out and back in. There are more knowledgeable people around here to tell you.

What would be the use of such  setting remains unclear to me. How can one possibly play anything sensible in tempo using a mouse? Piano roll is so much more accurate and better.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
