How Do I Switch from Keys to Drums in PRV?

Hello-

I'm using Abbey Road Modern Drummer plug with kontakt in X2 and I wondered if there is a way I can change the simulated keyboard on the left to drum names? It seems to work in the native drum plug-in but can't find where/if I can do it with NI?

Thanks!

Stephen Davis

It's a split pane kind of deal. See if you can locate the separator bar with the mouse at either the top or the bottom of the PRV window. you have to drag to make it visible.

I have the same question. Sometimes I see piano keys and on some projects drum names. I found the split pane thingy, but when I dragged it down it was empty.

Actually, I found that if I right-click on the vertical keyboard I can select the display to be of another instrument and I just chose General MIDI (GM).

Worked great regardless of what soft-drum I'm using.

You can assign a drum map to the track.  You can have either a standard one, like GM or one that's customized.  Need help understanding what they are for beyond just the names, check out the tutorial video on did about them on my website at http://www.blades85.com

    Hope that helps.

I usually right-click on anything when I'm not getting anywhere to see if there is a missing menu. I missed this one. Thanks to your tip, I found where I could chose GM, but the fonts are so small I can't read them. Yes I'm a tad older but I wouldn't be able to read them even when I was 27 years younger using Deluxe Music Construction Set on an Amiga...
I can't find where I can increase the font size.

I'm not sure how to increase the font size inside of X2, but there are assistance settings inside of Windows you could use. Go to control panel for the assistance option and look for the magnifier. Then just use it on the MIDI names.

I also had to right click on the keys to reassign them but the default drum maps I have in my machine are not even close (for many notes). I tried to find a drum map file online to import for the Addictive Drums, but could not find one. Does anyone know if such exists, or do I need to create my own?

You will benefit greatly from learning how to create/edit/delete your own drum maps.
Using preset drum maps is fine but they go out the window when you start building your own kits up.

The learning curve is a little on the steep side, but once you've built a dozen or so, it becomes second nature.

There is a great section in Scott Garrigus's books on learning how to manage drum maps effectively. Well worth a read.

Agreed, Bristol_Jonesey - that's why I created the drum map video tutorial where I walk through the creation of a map that is exactly the notes you want and none of the ones you don't.  Then you can stop relying on another map matching what you want it to.  Hope this helps.

@Blades, I saw your post above and did watch your video, thank you for posting that. scook's link was helpful (for me), more from the perspective that I tend to want to begin using fairly quickly rather than reading manuals, etc. When the mood or inspiration strikes, I like to capture these as quickly as possible... so I have been more focused to enabling that as best as possible.
