X1 Producer: No MIDI

I'm just getting started with X1 Producer. I have it installed on a DAW that I put together over 10 years ago -- I was running Cakewalk's Pro Audio 8 and 9 at that time, plus several other applications. The computer has been through a few upgrades since then. Currently it is running Windows 7 64-bit on a system with a 3.2 GHz processor and 8 GB of RAM installed.  I have about 3 terabytes of drive space, approximately 1.5 of which is available. My old DAW includes a few MIDI instrments, a keyboard, a Roland JV-1010, and a Roland GR-33 midi guitar synth, plus I've recently added another keyboard, but it is not yet installed into the DAW.  I'm using a couple of mixers (a Mackie 12-channel plus a Midiman 6-channel) plus an oldy-but-goody M-Audio Delta 66 card for handling audio ins/outs/recording but right now the M-Audio Delta is idled (no speakers hooked up to it at the moment). For now I just want to get things working. I also have an older Sound blaster (Audigy LS) installed, which is the sound card that is currently active, and which still has the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth onboard. I know the sounds are crappy for the most part, but like I said, I just want to get things working. I've also activated X1's TTS-1 soft synth.

I have imported a basic midi file that I would like to edit, including adding some nicer soft synth sounds to it, probably using one of the selection of soft synths like Roland's GrooveSynth or RaptureLE.  But the problem from the beginning is that I can't get anything to play. The output sliders show nothing, while the tracks' sliders are reacting to the midi music.

I have even gone to the trouble of selecting the TTS-1 as the MIDI in/out from the Inspector for each track. Still nothing. It took me a few tries before I realized I had to have every track selected before I installed TTS-1. But now I'm getting meter indications for every track. But still nothing on the output side. And yes, I configured TTS-1 for MIDI output.

I have read through the MIDI tutorial that is included with X1. To say that it is sketchy and bare-bones is an understatement. It was of scant help. I went to Edit/Preferences/Midi Devices and nothing is showing. I had to come here and do a search on "X1 midi" to find out that this is only for external midi devices. So I guess my Sound blaster card is not an external device then, is it?

I'm puzzled why my SB card is not showing up anywhere for MIDI. I have it selected temporarily for my audio in/out and it's working fine for this.  Any suggestions?  And of course, if you might have an idea as to what I've overlooked regardign TTS-1, I'd like to know about this. Really it is my intention to use soft synths whenver possible. That old Roland JV-1010 is a fairly capable unit, but it is getting rather long in the tooth now.

Oh, I should probably let you know: I've been using the Sound Blaster card's onboard synth in a couple of other MIDI applications on this machine and it works fine. I've also gone through just about the entire list of soft synths that came with X1 and have gotten them all to work as well -- testing them out on a few files that came with Cakewalk, plus one music file that I've written, using Cakewalk's notation (Staff) interface. It runs the soft synths just fine as well.

What if I convert the midi file to a .cwp?  Do you think that might get things unstuck?

Thanks in advance.

Never mind. I should have paid attention to the stickies. SONAR Resources for beginners - read this first answered my question. At least for the SB card, at any rate. Upon further reading I also found the procedure for activating the TTS-1 synth.

So, problems solved -- for now.
