We are currently awaiting X3e, an update with various fixes. The next new version will be X4 which may not be released for another 6 months or more. Cakewalk were on an annual upgrade cycle with new versions released around October, but there have been disruptions to this cycle at times to there nearly being 2 years between major releases on occasion.

No. X is the series and the number after it is new version or full release. Updates within that version are designated by letters. At the moment we are at Sonar X3d. Each release or version has a number of extras.
Sonar X3 is the base version, Sonar X3 Studio has more features while Sonar X3 Producers has the most features. This scaling of product names is common to each release. Of course each version is differentiated by its price with Producer being the most expensive.
ah right, I though X was like 10 as in the roman numeral at the start, from sonar 8.5 onwards, then sort of figured it is a completely new application (or is it?)... or is it the beginning of this interface called Skylight moving away from Sonar 8.x (BTW is there a version 9.x)? What was Sonar 8.x interface called then (and does it even resemble Sonar X??).. Anyway, I think Producer is well worth the extra $$, I think I will stick with any of the Producer versions as long as they don't get too expensive - good work to cakewalk, I'll STFU now hehe... I don't think anyone really whinged just expressing their opinion, there's nothing wrong with that...

you realise that this thread started back in October last year when Sonar X3 was released.
As for Sonar X.
Cakewalk started off as the name of the Software sold by Twelve Tone systems in the late 80's/Early Nineties.
It ended with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.
The next version adopted the name Sonar in about 2000/1, which was then followed By Sonar 2 etc right up to Sonar 8 then Sonar 8.5. there was no Sonar 9. It was at that point that development cycles became longer than the usual annual upgrade. At that time also Cakewalk adopted a new styling and GUI convention that they dubbed Skylight which has been the characteristic look of the X series.
In 2010/11 Sonar X series began and it was made clear to us that X did not stand for the Roman numeral for 10 rather just the letter X. So in its roughly annual release Cycle, that saw X1 and X2 take 3 years to develop, last year in October 2013 we saw the release of Sonar X3. Whether Cakewalk adopt the annual upgrade cycle again we don't know but if that were the case a new version would not be due until about October 2014.

The followup to this thread could be the fact that now if you buy X3 You also get Groove3 X3 Explained free. Not for those who already own X3. If you want to rant then rant about this. Keep moving into the future.

we've had record after record breaking of 40 deg Celsius days in a row ever since recordings have started for the month of Jan, usually it is mildly mid 20's and now were going through another heatwave... Never experienced -25, tell me if you go 4 a leak (pee) does it instantly freeze? Ouch!!!

I'm not frustrated by the pricing policy. However I did buy X1-X2 upgrade on Aug 31st for $100. Literally the next day, the same offer was $50... I emailed Cakewalk and explained that I bought the software one day early. No dice. Oh well, now I'm waiting for another good offer to upgrade to X3.
Have to admit that X1 had a "d" patch and X3 has a "d" patch - X2 had only an "a" patch and is less stable for me compared to X1d.
I'll just wait until another $50 upgrade offer comes for X3. Sonar for me is my hobby, not my career.

There was an awesome deal on X3 Studio to X3 Producer last month, it may have included X2 Studio - I think it was $149, that deal shut me up the f%^k, that's for sure!

im sorry but im not sure I believe this posts, more than 10 times I have witnessed people saying the same thing and seen someone from cakewalk chime in and say please PM me (they have made special arrangements for customers who are a few days away from sales like that) so you either didn't email the department or didn't keep up here on the forum. cake understands this happens and I've seem them make exceptions on many occasion's.

People will complain about $50-150 upgrades and yet go to the bar, or have the best cables or wireless packages. One always have a choice not to buy a product.
