Throwing my cat into the kettle of fish here ...I did used to use Audacity for small tweakages and getting an mp3 ready after mastering but now find its present LAME incarnation a little too toppy and glassy. I far prefer Goldwave for preparing mp3s for streaming...and I still use the  excellent R8brain for downrezzing.
I was mastering with Ozone within Sonar, exporting at 24/96, downrezzing the wav in R8brain, then converting to mp3 in Goldwave...a little long-winded flow for general recommendation but what I'm used to. However, as I'm about to embark on X3PE from 6PE I gleefully espy cupboardfuls of mastering tools...so I'll probably do exactly the same as I've done with the exception of Ozone!

I used wavelab for years but my "essentials" XP version wont run on my Win7-64 machine. With that being said, more that I get into cakewalk's Pyro the more I like it and it is my go to editor now.

Bandlab Platinum and every other toy I can get my hands on...and yes I'm way in debt over this obsession...

Hi,
Is anyone here using Audacity for an audio editor?

No!

Audacity is still x32.
But I can recommend a free x64bit audio editor called Waveshop. 100% FREE and safe and made by Chris Korda.
http://waveshop.sourceforge.net/index.html

You can customize any colors of the GUI too. I have personal mailed Chris many time, very competent and very friendly. She will answer any question you might have.

Features

  • Bit-perfect: samples aren't changed needlessly
  • Very fast: all processing is done in memory
  • 64-bit version can edit files exceeding 4GB
  • Supports most file formats including AAC/MP4, MP3, FLAC and Ogg/Vorbis
  • Clipboard: Copy/Cut/Paste/Insert/Delete
  • Unlimited undo
  • Normalize and/or fix DC offset
  • Amplify (boost/attenuate)
  • Fade in/out/custom, linear or logarithmic
  • Peak statistics
  • RMS statistics with histogram
  • Reversal and inversion
  • Find clipping with detailed report
  • Extract channels to mono files
  • Insert/delete/swap channels
  • Change audio format
  • Sample rate conversion
  • Generate audio w/ envelopes and modulation
  • Edit surround speaker assignments
  • Find zero crossing
  • Multiple Document Interface (MDI)
  • Multithreaded processing
  • Playback via DirectSound
  • Peak-hold meters with surround support
  • Real-time spectrum analyzer
  • Recording with no limit but disk space
  • One-touch and sound-activated recording
  • EQ, compression, and other effects via LADSPA plugins

Best Regards
Freddie

I don't think Waveshop handles loops defined in wav files, which I find useful when working with samples.

If this is important, I know of only Wavosaur among the free editors.

It (waveshop) doesn't really do VST plugins either - without a wrapper.

I actually like Wavepad (not free) best - but not as much as Audition. I guess I'll just stick with AA3 until it doesn't work anymore - and just pay attention to Wavepad and one or two others - every once in a while.

- Intel i7 3770K 3.5GHz
- Windows 10 Pro - 64 bit
- Cakewalk by BandLab x64
- Reaper x64
- 16GB RAM
- Asus P8z77-V mobo - using the integrated Intel graphic card (HD4000)
- MOTU Ultralite AVB audio interface
I usually use ASIO set at 64 or 128 samples
er - that's it I think...

Thanks for reminding me, I have an Adobe Audition 3.0.1 license so I've downloaded it and I'm trying it out. Seems to work fine on Win 8.1

It's tricky to find.   It's $149 from AA3.  I have CS5.5 AA which is $79 to upgrade.

Yes it's hard to find but I thought it was worth it to upgrade to a full purchased version as it may be the last available one to get. I had CS 5.5 but it doesn't burn cd's. CS 6 does. The upgrade price for me was $75.00. I figured get it while I can.

I have AA3. Got it on a student purchase. Only reason I went with it was that Cool Edit 2K started not working with the X series. That was a fantastic program. Then Adobe bought them out. And I quit upgrading. They wanted way to much for an upgrade after Adobe took them over.

Over the years I find myself using/needing an outside editor less and less.

But someone just brought up something I forgot about. Burning to Red Book standards. I use to use Red Roaster (by Samplitude people). But like other things, quit working on new OS.

Thanks for the link Freddie. I will try that out. Looks like a good program.
