Since Some of You Have Asked About My Doing More Videos...

Here's my chance to conduct free market research from the target audience

Now, I'm not guaranteeing anything because I'm pretty darn busy these days, but I would indeed like to do more videos. What I'm thinking about is a video on mastering in Sonar. I feel X3 turned a corner and this is now not only viable, but you can actually do some pretty cool mastering tricks.

But...because my time is indeed limited, I may only get a chance to do one or two videos...so I want to choose wisely. Does mastering seem like a good idea? Any other suggestions?

Your assistance would be most appreciated.

    Great idea and offer Craig.

Mastering is a big +1 and EQ if possible (instrument by instrument - not a generic EQ overview) I know it's a big area but would be worthwhile I think.

This is a good topic to do a video on. There are good videos that already show the features of Sonar and explain basic operations. There are mixing videos, but I can not think of anyone who has done a mastering video using Sonar. This is something I would be very much interested in buying.

Would you use any third party plugs or only the stuff that comes in Sonar? would you take an entire song and master it, or would you just show tips using a collection of different music.

I am sure it will be a best seller and I for one am looking forward to it.

I'd likely use only the tools that come with Sonar...it's a pretty complete toolset. I'm still undecided about whether it would be best to take an entire song and show everything involved in mastering it, or doing a collection of tips. Some of it depends on getting permission to use songs from various clients to demo mastering techniques; some of them have specific problems that make it really easy to show solutions.

I'd say do like Seth and Brandon did...go thru the motions with one song, and show how you can go from a rough recording to a finished product, showing numerous mastering tips along the way. That's what got me excited about the Pro Channel.

Craig . . . would love to see you do the video on Mastering ! . . . but for your other one ;), perhaps something about setting up vocal tracks in a mix.
Not so much about the new Melodyne trickery, but some tips about how to get vocals sitting in a mix, and use of doubling, reverb, delay, compression, automation etc . . .
I'll stay tuned for whatever vids you do, I'm sure they'll be great.

You already are, you're giving me free consulting!

The Bakers are doing their part, too. The Gibson acquisition process could have turned into a disaster if X3 had been problematic. Instead, it was a great rollout of a mature program. So instead of having to worry about damage control, I could start thinking about what could take this further...and the Bakers have made it clear they'd like to see more videos.

    Yes Craig.

This would fill a gap in your "product range", and I like the idea of taking a single, mixed track and applying your own brand of mastering technique to it.

    +1 from me

I would like to see the video start with the "mixed" track with some explanation of why you should "leave headroom for mastering" - and some guidance on how much headroom to leave - ie what level should you mix to?

I definitely like the idea of a video on mastering.  IIRC, you floated the idea back during X1, I think.  I guess the move to Gibson put the kibosh on that.

I'm so glad that you may be able to do it now, and look forward to it.

I'd go for the one track vote too Craig as I think there's less inclination towards album releases these days, especially from small unsigned bands and artists, that like to showcase themselves on soundcloud, bandcamp, iTunes and the like.

Yes mastering is a great idea. I have not "exploit" the Sonar tools enough yet.

I have a couple of suggestion.

Show us how to set the frequency range of a multiband compresser like the LP64.

Show us some common mistakes of mastering so that we know what not to do.

Perhaps show us how to  master 2 to 3 different styles or music. For example a guitar based rock/metal music and somethings else like EDM.

+++ to the above comments.  Many obviously experienced contributors to these threads have previously spoken of needing to outside Sonar for mastering.  I wonder why?  I have found Craig's previous videos (and Karl's too) very helpful.  I'd love to see more on this topic.  But please, some tips on acoustic instruments too!

I like the idea a lot!

My suggestion is take examples of decent mixes to work from like country and pop. And then focus on mastering versus mixing.
    - Basic starting points
    - What's typically problematic areas - or - what's the typical mistakes / oversights that elude us
    - Is there low hanging fruit
    - Standard mastering goals from a professional viewpoint
    - Loudness vs quality vs loudness
    - Secret sauce tips (bring on the magic)

    Thanks!!

    Hi Mr. Anderton,

I think that a mastering video is an excellent idea. Not so much to take away from the Engineers that do it but to give us the basis for a clearer understanding of the process so that we as enthusiast can make better decisions both musically and technically .  This will also help us to be better cleints to the ME in the process.

I would like to add that if possible to preface the video with a short section on some tips on achieving a good mix "balance" prior to mastering. This for me is an important (if not the most important) aspect to starting the Mastering process off in a position for a successful and productive experience, especially for budding and growing enthusiasts. Thanks.

"Life could capture me with songs of innocence...
And enrapture me with pleasures galore...

    Show us:
    1. how to set the frequency range of a multiband compressor like the LP64.
    2. common mistakes of mastering so that we know what not to do. (The tutorials I've learned best from, music or 3D, is better when mistakes by the presenter are shown. It's good to know workarounds.)
    3. different styles or music. For example a guitar based rock/metal music and something else like EDM.
    4. Setting vocals in the mix / When not actually recording a live band (single person records all parts) how to blend DI instruments together.

From your earlier videos I particularly like unusual or 'out of the box' type engineering tricks 'n' tips.

e.g. ethereal reverb, mock stereo acoustic guitar, that kind of thing.

For myself, I'd like to see some more guitar-related content.

As mastering is something that's very specific to the piece of music in question (and how it's been mixed), as well as requiring a particular listening environment and good, experienced ears, I'm not sure how much can be taught/learnt from a video.

Having said that I like all your videos so would buy another whatever the content :-)
