volume fader jumps when I right click automation write

This sometimes happens - what causes it? Thanks

    Are you in offset mode?
     
    The usual giveaway is a little plus sign next to the fader.
     
    Toggle it on/off with 'O'

    No problem.
     
    Offset mode catches a lot of people out (including myself) on occasion
