SWA Videos for Sonar X3
They have three videos available. Two from Groove3...X3 Explained & X3 New Features They also have a Bundle available...SWA Sonar X2 Explained and X3 New Features. Here is the confusion. They are all three different from each other. So which is better, Karl Rose or Eli Krantzberg? And, are these videos more or less on the Cakewalk University, where there are many videos available. Just wondering.

No idea but I've just gone through all of the Sonar videos on Groove3, even the X1 ones. They are all excellent I totally recommend the year subscription as there's other stuff on there like theory, melodyne, maschie, etc etc ... well it seems endless....

Both are very good. They have different styles. IMO Karl goes into more detail about individual effects and processes in more detail but Eli covers more overall ground.

In the last few weeks, I've picked up: - Mixing in Sonar (X1), - X3 Explained, - X3 New Features, and - Complete Sonar X2. I've only watched a few of the last two so far, but the others I've watched from start to finish. All (from what I've seen so far) are crammed full of helpful information. And I bought these after buying, "The Power in Cakewalk Sonar" (X2) which includes a DVD containing pretty much everything covered in the book and is, IMHO, as valuable as the book itself. And despite the fact that there's a lot of overlap, every one of these sources comes at the subject from a slightly different angle and so they're all helpful in their own ways. I also picked up "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" on a recommendation from (I think it was) Bitflipper, another member of this forum, and I'm happily wading through that as well. Almost all the information about X2 is applicable to X3 and what little that isn't becomes apparent quite quickly. Hope this helps.

I posted a review on Amazon for that book. It's a great book for the beginner and the DVD is kind of a not so hidden bonus since I find his video presentations even more effective than his writing , imho.

I've just started reading "The Power Of Cakewalk" by William Edstrom, and couldn't recommend it highly enough. It's s step by step guide, from first installing Sonar, through recording/effects/mixing techniques and exporting to CD. I've not had chance to watch the DVD yet, but it seems a great bonus. Cakewalk should issue this with Sonar. It's the perfect starters guide, and I've learned a few things too, like extending the browser and setting the I/O Buffers Highly recommended, and will post a full Amazon review when I get a chance ..

I recommend (although I may not be the best person to make ANY type of recommendation at this point) getting through the entire book first (even if you take the time to no notes as well) before looking at the videos. I didn't realize what was on the DVD until after I'd finished reading the book. I assumed it was demo files or tutorial companion files of some kind, so it was a nice surprise. And the quality of the videos is pretty high, IMHO.

I'm fo the school of thought that these choices don't have to be either/or type things. Cakewalk often offers sales on Karl's material. Groove3 often has 30 day passes where you can check out the material by Eli. Groove3 usually has a chapter or two free at all times if you just want to check out his style. With the books "The Power of Cakewalk" is a very affordable option. The fact that it is affordably priced and includes a DVD makes it a no-brainer for the beginner. I would not think it odd to own all of these along with the Next Sonar Power book by Scott Garrigus.

Tremo, Of the two options you pose, the Bundle is way better for someone coming from X1 or X2 as both vids include a LOT more material about the new tools in X3 as well as the X series in general, covering X2 For me, Groove's X3 Explained was a lot of repeat of earlier X version vids, and since I have bought all the earlier X1/2 vids, it wasn't that helpful. However, it was ment to be a general introduction for people new to the X series, so for you, it might be great! I think there is a LOT in the bundle, especially for the price and it sounds like YOU need the foundation, which is more deeply covered in X2 Explained... If I had no vids, I'd buy the SWA bundle which is a steal and maybe Grooves "new features" which gives another perspective on X3s new tools

Late to the party as always...... Thanks all for the support. To the OP. The SWA videos especially the X2 one are very detailed and cover basics such as initial set up all the way through to the more complex areas of the program such as how to use Audiosnap - all covered in detail - hence the nine hour play time. Also covered are some of the more unusual aspects such as writing instrument definitions, drum maps, etc. The X3 video covers the new aspects of X3 in similar detail and compliments the X2 video rather than repeating info. Thank you all for the great information. I now have the SWA X2 and am working on digesting it. From there I will have an easier task deciding my next move. I will say that the Groove3 site is very tempting and I might move in that direction, as there is so much else available once you subscribe. All of this is very good.

Just to add something about "The Power In Cakewalk SONAR" and it's included DVD tutorials: William Edstrom Jnr has also done several videos for Groove3, including "Mixing with SONAR", "Ozone Explained", and several more on Waves and Studio One. You can always have a look at the examples on there to see if you like his style.

I just placed my order for "The Power in Cakewalk Sonar" on Amazon. It must be for X2 (what I want), as it says..."Due to changes in workflow from SONAR X1 and earlier, you will get the most out of this book if you have SONAR X2 or later". My new build will have X3D. So I am happy to see this reference as part of my library. Now I am just waiting for the upcoming release of "Sonar X3 Power!: The Comprehensive Guide by Scott R. Garrigus (Apr 2, 2014). I have one free month subscription on Groove3. I might up it for another month or just get a yearly subscription. These resources and another 10,000 hours working in the studio and I just might get myself in trouble...LOL. No eating, sleeping, family, work, trout fishing, or golfing allowed...LOL.

Scott, Good point, as I am not really doing anything else at 4:00 in the morning. Nothing better than watching the sun rise while fly fishing or any other "human" means necessary to catch a beautiful Rainbow Trout. I also enjoy a good run at Largemouth Bass using Texas Rigs, etc. Damn I wish it was April...
