Jay Tee 4303 The root issue is that you lack the funding to exercise your addiction to its fullest potential. You need to get out there and make some money so you can buy some more plugins. Chop chop.
You couldn't be farther from the truth Already been there done that in regards to work, decades of live performances and recording behind me. Point is; I'm retired with a good steady flow of good income and money in the bank ;-) My music studio is old but rock solid, although many here would want to release as much G.A.S as possible *lol* Seriously, I use out-dated software and the same old secondhand audio interface (Edirol FA-66) that I got years ago. Just one keyboard and a guitar will do me fine. I take good care of it all. Nothing is broken and nothing stops my creativity and pure enjoyment of making music. :-) I live in a very nice two-story house with central air, and a double car garage with a boat. So nice and quiet here, just the way I like it. :-)

RE: Lucky me, I'm retired, I have plenty of time to spare; I intend to enjoy posting way more often on these forums. Enjoy creating music; fun times with SONAR and of course spending good times with my wife and family. I certainly don't plan on wasting a ton of G.A.S on more music gear that I don't necessarily need. I'm happy to stick with what I have What I won't do on these forums is resort to flaming; levity and name calling without all due respect Stress and hatred over trivial matters is not good for your well being. Take care of yourself. To keep the peace; do not quote (me) and reply to me; do not have any further contact with me --- indefinitely. Btw, I have not reported you. I don't mean any harm or inconvenience. Honestly, I was being sincere, giving my opinion and advise with all due respect. These forums are more frequently read by 'visitors' who don't post but I'm sure most will appreciate good advise that I and others have contributed. This is a great site! Have a pleasant day, good luck!

SongCraft My only lifelong 'addiction' is for the love of music (art), my wife and family, I have more than enough money, and therefore I totally refuse to selfishly and needlessly waste any money on music related gear.
* In General: not directed at you or anyone else here: In relation to above said post's'. . . A lot of writers/musicians are never satisfied with what they have, always whinging as an excuse for their lack of creativity and studio knowledge / experience (or simply not naturally suited to this sort of endeavor) --- also not willing to try harder, always looking for loopy shortcuts (laziness) --- if not for challenges you cannot hone your skills greatly. If you can't stand the heat? Chop Chop --- Get out of the kitchen --- try basket weaving instead :P
Jay Tee 4303 If you observe closely the structure and semantics of my post, you might discover a thing. Perhaps a couple of them. Perhaps none. :-)
I'm sorry, it's unfortunate that you misunderstood; I was simply expressing 'my own opinion' and clearly stated; not directed at you or anyone one else here. My contribution is also an 'addition to the topic' based on actual facts along with good advise. Hey I don't expect everybody to have the same discipline and control of G.A.S. ;-) That said: Just because others disagree with you or prefer to avoid your comments completely; does not mean you can risk violating the TOS by posting snide remarks. I hope you understand, keep the peace and move on. Thanks. :-)
In threads obviously posted for fun, like this one, the trick is to get your point across without....hmmm...well....ok...this: "always whinging as an excuse for their lack of creativity and studio knowledge / experience (or simply not naturally suited to this sort of endeavor) --- also not willing to try harder, always looking for loopy shortcuts (laziness) --- if not for challenges you cannot hone your skills greatly. If you can't stand the heat? Chop Chop --- Get out of the kitchen --- try basket weaving instead :P " ...cuz it kills the joy. Loosen up, lose the corncob, and enjoy life some. If you MUST make a point in a lighthearted environment, try not to smack old professionals in the face with "lazy, no talent, no experience, not suited, no creativity" . I think you have it in you to rise above the limitations of frankly damaging bluntness in a light hearted environment. Prove me right. :-)

In addition to my previous post: A lot of writers/musicians are never satisfied with what they have, always whinging as an excuse for their lack of creativity and studio knowledge / experience.... Often (not always) it's not the software at fault, for example: it's either the hardware, host (DAW), drivers and such or user-error. That said: Sometimes people spend more money than needed; for example, purchase yet another host and sometimes (not always) find far more issues and finally realizing that it's hardware issues and the previous host is a far, far better DAW. {doh} :P Having patience and willingness to dig deeper can have it's rewards. Songwriting and arranging is a labor of love, the same can be said about using host and plugins. I love SONAR and the plugins I already have, I need not be seduce into purchasing more :P @ Jay Tee Both you and Vastman openly started posted directly at me on a 'personal level' (Off-topic) to provoke me, but I did not and will not ever resort to hatred and vendettas. And as explained earlier, my post (that one paragraph you mentioned) clearly was not directed at you or anyone else here, (the heading is in bold type.) My post (in one paragraph) started with advise, then ended with suggestions said tongue in cheek; ending with = :P, and just to make sure I also added = (humor) Although I have years of experience I am still learning more and more about recording, the music biz and such, I don't expect everyone to agree with me and my communication skills are not always perfect, yet clearly in that post I have not personally attacked you or anyone else here..... For that, I get personally attacked numerous times, in a separate matter (not involving you) I'm subjected to: Defamatory, Name Calling and Harassment with obvious intent to flame. And you and I are talking in circles. That said; To keep the peace and hopefully in fairness to the OP; to prevent this thread from closure: I now also kindly ask you to refrain from having any further contact with me. Thanks! Okay, I'm gonna be busy now.... weaving more baskets :P

I haven't checked out the forum features for a while; out of curiosity I had a peek at the settings, there is a way to "Hide Forums" (any one or more if you wish) In user control panel > 'Forum Filter;' select one or more forums and then click on "Hide Selected Forum(s)". This is pretty cool feature, but I guess once you log-out and clear cookies and other temp' data the forum will show.

Greg, I certainly don't mean any disrespect and don't want to step into the fray, but I thought I'd just make sure - the original poster was (half) joking - this is all in fun. But the forum hiding feature is cool, and I've used to hide most stuff so I can get to this forum to satisfy my GAS easier. :)

Thanks for that tip but I don't want to hide the category. I love this category and thank everyone posting all the great stuff. I would have never found out about a lot of plug-ins and virtual instruments if not for this category. Big thanks to CClarry. I really can't understand how a fun topic can turn a bit unfun though. Sad.

It's all good my friend! As a guitar player, I think I understand GAS better than most. I finally managed to create a sort of self-funding "gear fund" using ebay. I would but stuff that I knew I could roll over for what I paid for it or even more in some cases and just spent years buying and selling stuff and getting to try all sorts of gear - mostly vintage stuff I couldn't find locally. I'd keep the stuff that I really liked, and ended up running out of things to try. then came VSTs... :)

I believe I got this as intended, in the spirit of a commonality many of us share, it was a funny way to put it. I went through several stages concerning G.A.S. Initially I thought that there were actually things I could buy that would improve me as a musician. This is, in fact , chasing the wrong path. Only hard practice, the right knowledge and mixing skill will make a recording sound the best, and I'm not there yet, but I enjoy trying, so I don't think I'll be quitting any time soon. A lot of these things can make something that already sounds good sound better....another subject. The second stage was the realization that these things gave me more capability if I knew how to use them. They saved time in some cases and made a chore a joy. The third stage was in making comparisons and realizing that there are more similarities than differences in many cases. IOW I could do the same thing with product A which I already owned instead of product B that I didn't own yet. My tendency was to think that a new product with a well known name was always a little better. Many purchases later I realized this reality but I can't give anything back so I still have all of it. What probably bothers me the most about the whole thing now is that I have a lot of software that I payed good money for that I forget I own. This is, I guess, the price of finding your way in this because you don't always know unless you try and in order to try you usually need to buy(especially if It's 50% off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) There has been enough success at this to keep me still looking at what's out there, so I keep coming back to the software/hardware trough off and on. Occasionally I'll bite. I have found a lot I like but not enough to stop me from looking at more. Yes, I was once a software addict and sometimes I still fall off the wagon....now, who was next in the circle? I bought a lot of things I didn't need in order to find out what it was I needed. And that is probably different for everyone.

Check behind the dumpsters in the alley, he chills when popo rolls by. If he's not there, a chapter of Plugin Anonymous meets at the Community (Guitar) Center on 40th. I'm trying to live with the plugs I have but it's tough. Sometimes I DL a BlueCat freebie just to feed the jones. I start every session with a resolve to make music and not twirl virtual knobs, and end every session twirling knobs, but I've been off buying the hard stuff for 14 weeks now. The dreams peaked around week 7. I'd see my hand reaching for an unfamiliar knob in an attractive interface, and I could almost hear the improvement, but just before I felt the rush, I'd wake up and know I was just chasing the dragon. They've subsided now and I wonder how it ever got that bad. I once tried to trade one of my cats for the Lexicon PCM bundle. (Okay, all my cats, but they jump on the keyboard while I have headphones on!) I think I've got a handle on it these days, but Nectar2 is calling me. Maybe just the one more plug will be the one that allows me to break free for good...

I hear ya ;-), From when I was 12, I worked weekends and studied; during my earlier years I spent thousands on music gear, accumulated a room full. About ten years ago I sold everything; keyboards, guitars, mics, computers and software without a concern; it's all material. What I won't sell is my soul :P A lot of people say, 'think outside the box' which is good advise, but in relation to this topic (software) and my needs "I'm thinking inside the box" :P . (DAW, ITB) . SONAR is a great example of feature rich, value for money ITB. I'm happy IMO and for my needs, since every project has something new; I see this as challenges; to focus more on songwriting and that alone keeps me happy. I love challenges, I strive to do better than previous efforts in regards to e.g. song structure, instruments, vocals, performances, harmonies, arrangements and mix. On the flip side of the coin - one example; Commercial Studios; midi suites, recording and mastering suites are focused on providing a good selection of quality gear (hardware and software) and that is going to require a heck of a lot more GAS {eeww} It's about impossible to please everyone and so... more of this and that, the list goes on and on... oh where oh where does it end :P

It can be said for hardware as well. I have hardware, comps, sound modules etc. collecting dust because I bought so much over the years. I have given away a lot of gear as well to make room. Two complete PA systems, Guitar amplifiers and more. I manage to find young musicians who can't afford much. I know I can sell my stuff but I like helping these kids out. I'm full of G.A.S. beleive me.... With all the fun stuff acquired, the basics always works the best though. There's no way around it.

Check behind the dumpsters in the alley, he chills when popo rolls by. If he's not there, a chapter of Plugin Anonymous meets at the Community (Guitar) Center on 40th. Maybe just the one more plug will be the one that allows me to break free for good... Isn't that like a meeting of winos at the local bar? ...I mean, hey I'm all for achapter meeting at Guitar Center and all.
