[Solved] Record button disappears from Audio track when VST is an input
Hi Everyone, I'm currently using the X3 trial as I'm demo'ing DAWs to buy and I'm having a problem routing a track for each drum from BFD3. I created a soft synth and chose "All Synth Audio Outputs Mono" (thus created all respective tracks) Then, in BFD3 I auto-assigned the tracks and this also works correctly as each drum's signal is being properly routed into individual tracks into sonar. The problem is that even though everything is correct with the signal path, the audio tracks created are not able to be armed. Now that I look at it, the record button disappears from any audio track once I select a vst as an input of the track. Any help would be appreciated because this doesn't seem right to me. Thanks in advance, Patrick

With a VSTi only the MIDI track records data, the audio tracks play the audio generated the synth. If needed, it is possible to print wave files in audio tracks from the MIDI data by freezing or bouncing the synth.

When you insert a soft synth, you need to select a MIDI source track. What you are seeing is indeed correct. You don't record the audio output, you record the MIDI being sent to it. If you are using an external controller, you can arm the MIDI track, and record your input. If you are using the included patterns, you will need to drag these to the MIDI track. It's not like recording a guitar. You are not recording the audio, but the data that triggers the synth. Your routing/signal flow should be like this: Controller>MIDI source track>synth>Synth audio outs>Master bus(or another bus outputting to the master bus)> main outs. Once you wrap your head around this, it's easy breezy, and it's the same for all soft synths.

Thank you for your replies and their quickness. If that's a VSTi thing then I assume that is why I can do this the exact same way in Pro Tools and get audio for each drum. I understand enabling "Midi Source Track" and recording-enabling that track, but how is that possible in my situation where I need the vst to route multiple tracks and then to record each track individually. The only way for me to route the individual drums into SONAR from BFD3 (as far as I know) is the way I mentioned (I'm not counting exporting from BFD3 and importing into Sonar. That would defeat the purpose). If I record enable the soft synth then I can freeze that and get the audio but that is one track with all the drums in it. Any more help would be appreciated, Thanks, Patrick

Freeze will generate audio for each audio track associated with the synth. What is printed to the tracks depends on the synth configuration. It is also possible to drag a frozen track to another audio track as a kind of quick bounce.

Can you give us some details on your process? Specifically, how are you triggering the drums in BFD?

Wonderful. I apologize as I was naive and assumed it would just bounce the one track. Thank you very much for your help.
