Saffire Pro 40 and S/PDIF?

Feel free to move this to Hardware. I put it here because there are mostly tumbleweeds in the Hardware forum.

The problem: I am unable to select S/PDIF as the sync source on my Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. The manual says to click on the red display (which currently reads "Internal") to select the clock source, but left/right/double-clicking does nothing.

(It also says to click on the sample rate to change it, but that's incorrect. That's been moved to the context menu invoked via the Settings button. I'm thinking the software has been revised but not the manual. MixControl is 3.4b1, AFAIK the most recent version.)

I have a synth connected to the S/PDIF input, and I'm able to record audio through it, but of course there are clicks in the recorded audio because it's not synced properly.

Anyone recording via S/PDIF with a Focusrite interface who can clue me in?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It's not the most recent version you have 3.4 beta. My first recommendation is uninstall, reboot. Install 3.4 full release and do a full hardware reset of the saffire in mix control. Remove any legacy firewire drivers they should not be installed in 3.x

    Cheers.

    Hello Bit Flipper,
Along with the software update, I saw similar behavior if the host is running. My experience is to make changes "out" of the DAW and sync the hardware sources.  I found that the connection appears consistent when depending on which is "master". That is the device that I turn on first ( must admit this maybe carried over behavior from my Digi 002 days). IHTH

That was the answer, thanks! The TotalMix application would not show the sync menu while SONAR was open.

I would still get rid of the beta and legacy firewire drivers (not sure if you have legacy firewire or not but sure you are on beta). Your firmware will also be on old beta.
I gave you the full detail to compare with on this thread #13:

I've downloaded but not yet installed the current TotalMix app. I'm reluctant to rock the boat - I had a bad experience upgrading my MOTU software that shut me down and required searching out an older driver to get functioning again.

I had originally installed the beta - at their suggestion - because at the time it was the only 3.x version that would install under XP. I don't know if the current version is a post-beta build, or if the b1 build is still more recent. If the former, then it's safe to install; if the latter, I could be dead in the water.

All things considered, I've been very happy with the Focusrite, including vendor support. Having to close SONAR to switch clock sources is a nuisance, but that's the only weakness I've found so far. The MOTU had far more annoying idiosyncrasies.

I'm referring to the focusrite mixcontrol. You have 3.4 beta 1. There has been a final release of 3.4 for some time specs will not have changed just beta bugs ironed out. The requirement is XP service pack 2 and above. You should do a hardware reset afterwards. Cheers

You can always set a system restore point beforehand, check it out for a while, then revert if needed. I have great faith in system restore, although of course, my faith might be misplaced :)

Keep in mind a system restore will not revert the firmware update which automatically happens when updating mix control. Regardless if it was me I'd get off beta drivers and firmware as soon as I could.

True indeed. Didn't realize a firmware update was inherent in the software update.

I wish all driver packages were distributed with firmware updates myself. Focusrite is one of the few manufacturers that gets it. Truth be told the latest drivers are tested and designed to work with the latest firmware, they go hand in hand as they communicate/connect with each other. Testing drivers with older firmware is generally non existent yet other manufacturers continue to distribute separate packages for some odd reason.
